I have been thinking about the word "soul" and it's usage in the bible.

people have often said ..it is the mind, will and emotions.

It appears to have a few meanings.

1) the internal part of the inner man.....spirit and soul I th 5:23 Heb 4:12

2) it is also used to mean your life here on this earth..as in when it says that Herod sought the young child's "life"..this is the same greek word = soul
Matthew 2:20 (KJV)
[SUP]20 [/SUP] Saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and go into the land of Israel: for they are dead which sought the young child's life.

A So, saving your soul could meant. depending on the context..

1) going to heaven

2) your life on this earth being destroyed.

It probably has a lot to do with how we view things too...the "lens" we use when we read scriptures.

Hyper-hell people will put us all in hell for not "obeying" God's Word when we do some work on Saturday or sunday..etc.

How would one know when scriptures are talking about our soul ( life ) us being destroyed here on this earth for doing stupid things..like walking after the flesh.....or is back to the "lens" thing again?

B How do you see the soul in it's interaction on this earth in regards to ...emotions, will...mindsets ( thinking )..etc.

Anyone have any observations, comments, queries, ..anyone want to attack my soul..lol..just kiddin'..trying to use the word "soul" humorously ...

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: “Your Soul Is Not Your Enemy”

First, a few definitions:
*spirit – new self; how you relate to God.
*soul – mind-will-emotions; how you relate to others.
*body – how you relate to the physical world.

You get your new, righteous nature fully from your spirit, not your soul.
Your soul (mind, will, and emotions) is like a mirror. It can be angled one way or another. It merely reflects something else – flesh or Spirit.

For example, the Scriptures reveal that your mind (within the soul) can be set on the flesh or set on the Spirit in any given moment (Romans 8:6). Still, you get your spiritual nature from your spirit, not from your oscillating “soul mirror.”
So we should not imagine some sort of innate conflict between the spirit and the soul. To do so is to set up a “house divided” theology all over again!

In terms of your spirit (righteous) and your “soul mirror”, you are actually heaven-ready in this moment. In heaven, you’ll only receive a new body, not a new spirit and not a new soul. Remember, there is no mention of any last-minute “soul polish” right before you hit the pearly gates.

Once we have a resurrection body in heaven, our soul will no longer be accessed by the world, the flesh, or the power of sin in any way, and our “soul mirror” will only reflect Jesus from that day forward.
But even now, the soul is not the enemy.

The soul just "reflects" what is being fed it.

Man became a living soul when God breathed life into the physical elements he was made of.

And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.
Gen 2:7

The breath is ruach, which means “wind, breath, air, spirit.”
Soul is “an animated, breathing, conscious, and living being.”

1 Corinthians 15:45
So it is written: "The first man Adam became a living being"; the last Adam, a life-giving spirit.

1 Corinthians 15:47
The first man was of the dust of the earth; the second man is of heaven.

1 Peter 3:20 KJV
(20) Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water.

Exodus 1:5 KJV
(5) And all the souls that came out of the loins of Jacob were seventy souls: for Joseph was in Egypt already.

According to these texts a soul is a living person.

Without scriptures to back this up, I have always felt like my soul feels things. It is sad, happy, has emotions. It is me. And my spirit is where wisdom dwells - the part of me that just "knows" - the part where the Holy Spirit dwells. Yet I have sensed a struggle between the two at times.

As a Christian, I sense more and more the mingling of both as my soul is fed by my spirit each day. Does this make sense?

What is meant by "He restores my soul?"

Yes..I think you are right. I watched the video here and it made sense to me that the soul "reflects" either the spirit or the flesh..whatever it goes with at the time. ...this is why when we go to heaven our soul will reflect nothing but Jesus because we will have no influence from this earth...did you watch this video? I found it answered a lot of questions to me about things.

He restores my soul could mean He calms my emotions and clears my mind....sets my will to do right..?..not sure but it's a good question!

I only just saw this thread but earlier today I was also wondering about the soul, in many movies I have seen people walking the earth alive but have no soul for whatever reason and they didn't feel right without it. This made me wonder if I for whatever reason no longer had a soul would my body be alive but my consciousness be gone? Like a walking living empty corpse?
Would I feel strange and uneasy not able to have rest inside?

How much of us is the soul?

Soul is “an animated, breathing, conscious, and living being.” Physical body + animating breath (spirit) of God = soul. Without the breath of God in your body, it would be a corpse, and not walking around anywhere, or conscious of anything. "Living corpse" as you said is a contradiction of terms!

Farley in the video says the body isn't evil. That contradicts what Paul said. The flesh is the body.

For I know that good does not live in me, that is, in my flesh. For the willing is present in me, but the doing [of] the good [is] not. Romans 7:18

Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; neither doth corruption inherit incorruption. 1 Corinthians 15:50

I also disagree with his conclusion that the inner man is the soul and spirit. The inner man is the spirit (Christ), and the outer man (the flesh) is the body and soul (Adam).

Thus also it is written, “The first man, Adam, became a living soul”; the last Adam [became] a life-giving spirit. But the spiritual [is] not first, but the natural; then the spiritual. The first man [is] from the earth, made of earth; the second man [is] from heaven. 1 Corinthians 15:45-47

The word of GOD separates between the inner man (spirit) and the outer man (soul).

For the word of God [is] living and active and sharper than any double-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, both joints and marrow, and able to judge the reflections and thoughts of the heart. Hebrews 4:12

Is this why when we die our soul no longer is in the body?

I can see where you would get that...sometimes in scripture flesh is used with different meanings....sometimes it is referring to our natural state...others it is referring to our propensity to do our own thing...which you can see by doing a quick check....

In our body is also our flesh..kinda like spirit/soul go together and body/flesh go together...they are similar but can be distinguishable.

,..there are many scriptures that have both body and flesh in them. which are 2 different words being used at the same time.

Colossians 2:11 (NASB)
[SUP]11 [/SUP] and in Him you were also circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, in the removal of the body of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ;

Here it talks about neglecting the body but it does nothing to satisfy the flesh,, ( two different things )

Colossians 2:23 (KJV)
[SUP]23 [/SUP] Which things have indeed a shew of wisdom in will worship, and humility, and neglecting of the body; not in any honour to the satisfying of the flesh.

There are a few more of them like this above.

The outer man is the body with the flesh in it...it dies..

2 Corinthians 4:16 (NASB)
[SUP]16 [/SUP] Therefore we do not lose heart, but though our outer man is decaying, yet our inner man is being renewed day by day.

Is our soul decaying day after day?...I would have to say no...

I'm pretty sure that the soul will be in heaven with the spirit

Why do you think you are going to be in heaven at all?
Do you not wish to be part of the population of the new earth???

The carnal mind is part of the soul. It is perishing if we put it to death by putting on the mind of Christ.

The soul is the real you. Your likes, dislikes, free will, etc. Without the soul we'd be like any other animal foraging around the earth trying to fulfill our physical needs.

to reflect the soul, who would have know that you have one.

The LORD said to Cain, "Why are you angry, and why has your face fallen?7 If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door. Its desire is for you, but you must rule over it."Genesis 4

we know anger, as an emotion. in 2015. at this point in history,(gen 4) what is defined as sin. and why must you rule over it. ie he killed his brother. the emotion, entangled the mind, to commit the act. (educated guess, only because we know more about emotion in 2015) etc

how do you combine thoughts with emotion. or are they split. so body, mind and spirit, would only be way of trying to describe it, using words.(the soul. )

yet the believers are given the holy spirit. yet the bible defines, as a personal teacher from god to you, teaching you things only what god wants to teach you. and opens your eyes at different levels of understanding as you walk alone with god.

in simple terms, your own way, of contacting god ,anytime, any place, any.ware. yet asks a question, why did god give us the holy spirit , yet it was his plan, all along. ie did we have 3 parts before god came in to our life, ie body, mind, and spirit.(human) why was the four part added or was that a part of the 3 we already had. ie that was revel by god as history progressed. etc

He will be with us here. (Rev 21)

And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.
2 And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.
3 ... I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God.
4 And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.
