Great Song!! You do realize the hair styles in that vid are a little over exagerated don't you? The only one that's realistic is the one where the person is wearing the yellow head band. I wore my hair long, parted down the middle, I have curly hair so when it grows out it tends to look like a lions mane lol. Contrary to the vid the majority of hippies took good care of their hair and didn't let it get like the vid a greasy rats nest full of fleas!

Anyway, two thumbs up on the song GIS.
Lol some of the hairstyles for women I like of the older styles, when women had long hair and didn't look like men, le sigh what a magical time that musta been. Lol I realize some are exaggerated, but then idk, even from them Woodstock videos looks like the hair is all over the place lol. Sometimes I muse to myself maybe some of the male Christian hippies just took that Samson story too far. That's okay though, lol the 80s pplz wiin the award for the hair that's like O_O.

I had a Pet Rock. I gave it to a friend's teen-age daughter. I don't think she understood the importance of it.
LOL I remember Pet Rocks. I never owned one. I was a Rolling Stones Fan though I wonder if that qualifies me as
a Pet Rock Fan as well.

Here's a great article and honestly I didn't read this before I equated the Beat Generation with Hippies. More than likely hippies for the most part were the kids of Beats.

The Hippie Counter Culture Movement (1960’s) – Mortal Journey
"By June of 1966, San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury district was the epicenter of the hippie movement. The area was already primed to become the center of hippie activity as its residents consisted of beatniks, writers, artists, and musicians."

Interesting bit of trivia about Dr. John.

"At age 16 he was hired by Johnny Vincent as a producer at Ace Records. There, he worked with artists like James Booker and Earl King, his musical experience expanding notably. He struggled through intermittent years of high school. While a student at Jesuit High School, he was already playing in night clubs, something the Jesuit fathers disapproved of. They told him to either stop playing in clubs or leave the school. He chose the latter. According to lore, this was the seed of his classic, "Right Place, Wrong Time."

The elders' music and videos indeed are intriguing for study I think. If anything one of the best documentations of history verifiable. Very useful for study of the Elders. Though they hate to hear it though, from my retrospect perspective the generation before is undeniably the most epic I can think of both in the strength of their youth in Depression/WW2 but also in their beloved old age, though many of them have now passed out of the present and gone to sleep as Ancients. Their tales and times boggle the mind. Praise Jesus though for letting me getting to know some the recent Ancients and for keeping them safe through the perilous times before me.

Lol figure since we've strayed forward from the 60s to take a peek backwards. It's no secret where any of this music or the culture of the 1960s-1970s came from; old people when they were young lol. Can kinda see, or maybe hear rather, the influences and changes in the music of one generation or even decade to the next.
Most of the Music of the 60s had its roots in the Rock and Roll of the 1950s. Elvis and Buddy Holly greatly influenced
the British Music scene. The Beatles and Rolling stones were steeped in their music. The earliest recording made by Paul McCartney was his version of That will be the Day made on a home tape recorder. He did own a number of Buddy Holly's songs. Going further back Rock and Roll came from Jazz and Blues of the twenties and thirties. The 1940s in Britain was
filled with morale boosting songs. Vera Lynns White Cliffs of Dover was the iconic song that says it all about Britain and WW2 its still a tear jerk er even now! Vera Lynn is still alive and in her 90s. An album of her hits was released last year to commemorate the end of the war in 11945.

That is well known even by my generation lol. I never been West but my friend Johnny went to Cali for a summer and went to the Haight-Ashbury lol. He had a blast I know as he a very artistic punk rock type guy, probably biggest fan of the beatniks actually I know of in the offline reality this my age.

Never been to California, but I always wondered if this excellent song is true pertaining to the weather of Southern California:

The slang of what might be called “hippie English.” A small sample:
cat: a colloquial term for “man”
dig: verb, meaning “to understand”
far out: along the lines of “awesome” or “cool” in contemporary American dialects
groovy: also along the lines of “awesome” or “cool”in contemporary American dialects
mama: term of endearment applied to female significant other
grass: marijuana
foxy: sexually attractive (usually applied to women, but occasionally men as well)

Oh, it is a very profound relationship one develops with their Pet Rock.

My older brother's favorite rock band (that released their first album in 1969) was Led Zeppelin. He used to play this song all the time.

I never listened to Led Zeppelin but I do remember this song. When the heavy metal bands started that is when I quit listening.

Michael Hucknall the lead singer for Simply Red was abandoned by his mother when he was three and it inspired him to later write "Holding Back the Years".

Holding back the years
Thinking of the fear I've had so long
When somebody hears
Listen to the fear that's gone
Strangled by the wishes of pater
Hoping for the arms of mater
Get to me the sooner or later

Holding back the years
Chance for me to escape from all I've known
Holding back the tears
Cause nothing here has grown
I've wasted all my tears
Wasted all those years
And nothing had the chance to be good
Nothing ever could yeah

I'll keep holding on
I'll keep holding on
I'll keep holding on
I'll keep holding on
So tight

I've wasted all my tears
Wasted all of those years
And nothing had the chance to be good
Cause nothing ever could oh yeah

I'll keep holding on
I'll keep holding on
I'll keep holding on
I'll keep holding on
Holding, holding, holding

That's all I have today
It's all I have to say

No list would be complete without Chick (a young woman) and Bread ($$) :)
And how about Old Man or Old Lady? LOL. They could be any age ;)

The Cowsills are still touring and performing Hair! I like
this live version; they have restored the original lyrics :)

She asked him why
Why I'm a hairy guy
I'm hairy noon and nighty-night night
My hair is a fright
I'm hairy high and low
But don't ask me why
'Cause he don't know
It's not for lack of bread
Like the Grateful Dead
Darlin...

Gimme a head with hair
Long beautiful hair
Shining, gleaming,
Streaming, flaxen, waxen

Give me down to there -hair!
Shoulder length or longer hair!
Here baby, there mama
Everywhere daddy daddy

Hair, hair, hair, hair, hair, hair, hair
Grow it, show it
Long as I can grow it
My hair

I let it fly in the breeze
And get caught in the trees
Give a home for the fleas in my hair
A home for fleas
A hive for the buzzing bees
A nest for birds
There ain't no words
For the beauty, the splendor, the wonder
Of my...

Hair, hair, hair, hair, hair, hair, hair
Grow it, show it
Long as I can grow it
My hair

I want it long, straight and curly, fuzzy
Snaggy, shaggy, ratty, matty
Oily, greasy, fleecy
Shining, steaming, gleaming
Flaxen, waxen
Knotted, polka-dotted
Twisted, beaded, braided
Powdered, flowered, and confettied
Mangled, tangled, spangled
And spaghetti!

Oh say can you see
My eyes if you can
Then my hair's too short

Down to here
Down to there
Down to there
Down to where
It stops by itself
Don't never have to cut it
'Cause it stops by itself

They'll be ga-ga at the go-go, when they see me in my toga
In my toga made of long, beautiful, blond, biblical hair
My hair like Jesus wore it, Hallelujah I adore it
Hallelujah Mary loved her son, why don't my mother love me?

Hair, hair, hair, hair, hair, hair, hair
Hair, flow it, show it
Long as God can grow
My hair, flow it, show it
Long as God can grow
My hair, flow it, show it
Long as God can grow
My hair

I was listening to a lot of this music last year at this time.
It all started with this song... oh, how I remember this song! :)
Jimmy Webb wrtoe this song, and nobody would sing it
until Richard Harris wanted to launch a musical career...
After Richard made it famous a few people did it, including
Glen Campbell, and disco diva Donna Summer.

Richard Harris - MacArthur Park

Spring was never waiting for us, girl
It ran one step ahead
As we followed in the dance

Between the parted pages and were pressed
In love's hot, fevered iron
Like a striped pair of pants

MacArthur's Park is melting in the dark
All the sweet, green icing flowing down
Someone left the cake out in the rain

I don't think that I can fake it
'Cause it took so long to bake it
And I'll never have that recipe again, oh noooooo

I recall the yellow cotton dress
Foaming like a wave
On the ground around your knees
Birds like tender babies in your hands
And the old men playing checkers, by the trees

MacArthur's Park is melting in the dark
All the sweet, green icing flowing down
Someone left the cake out in the rain

I don't think that I can take it
'Cause it took so long to bake it
And I'll never have that recipe again, oh noooooo

(Short instrumental interlude)

There would be another song for me
For I will sing it
There would be another dream for me
Someone will bring it

I will drink the wine while it is warm
And never let you catch me looking at the sun
And after all the loves of my life
After all the loves of my life, you'll still be the one

I will take my life into my hands and I will use it
I will win the worship in their eyes and I will lose it
I will have the things that I desire
And my passion flow like rivers through the sky

And after all the loves of my life
Oh, after all the loves of my life
I'll be thinking of you - and wondering why

(Longer instrumental interlude)

MacArthur's Park is melting in the dark
All the sweet, green icing flowing down
Someone left the cake out in the rain

I don't think that I can take it
'Cause it took so long to bake it
And I'll never have that recipe again
Oh noooooo, o-oh no-ooooo

The Cowsills were a great band...
Most of these songs were my "growing up" songs...I was 15 when Woodstock happened. Of course, at that time I was more redneck than hippie. Merle Haggard and Charlie Pride..and Hank. The first album I ever bought was Creedence Clearwater.. and John Fogerty is still singin better than ever.
