Hi All,

LESSONS FROM MATT 5: AND THE NEW COVENANT

[SUP]
16,[/SUP]
Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

[SUP]17,[/SUP] Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.
[SUP]18,[/SUP] For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.

Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. (Matt 5:17-18)

[SUP]19,[/SUP] Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
[SUP]20,[/SUP] For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.
[SUP]21, [/SUP]You have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment:
[SUP]22, [/SUP]But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.
[SUP]27,[/SUP] Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery:
[SUP]28,[/SUP]But I say unto you, that whosoever looks on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.

The Law of God (10 commandments) is the work of God (Ex 32:16) whatsoever God does is forever nothing can be added to it or taken away (Ecc 3:14). God's Law is perfect converting the soul (Ps 19:7). It is the very foundation of the Old and New Covenants (Ex 20:1:17, Heb 8:10-12). God's Law was spoken by God himself to His people (Ex 20:1-22). Jesus says Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away (Matt 25:35). Gods Law is still in force today (Ps 111:7-8, Rev 12:17, 14:12, 22:14, 1John 3:5-8, 1John 2:3-4 etc.). The Law of God reveals sin to us so we can see ourselves as we truly are sinners in need of a Saviour (Rom 3:20; 1John 3:4). It is the great standard of the judgement (Ecc 12:13-14, James 2:10-12, 1John 3:4, Acts 17:31). God's Law is our teacher revealing sin and the character of God and brings us to Christ at the foot of the cross that we might be saved by faith by Him who loves us and washed us in His own blood (Gal 3:24; Rev 1:5). God writes His Law in our hearts so that we become like him and we follow him because we love him (Heb 8:10-12) LOVE is the fulfilling (doing) of God's Law (Rom 13:10). This is why Jesus says to those that love him If you love me keep my commandments (John 14:15).

HEB 8: (new covenant)

[SUP]10,[/SUP] For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people: [SUP]11,[/SUP] And they shall not teach every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for all shall know me, from the least to the greatest. [SUP]12,[/SUP] for I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more.

God Fulfilling His Law (10 commandments) IN US through Faith?

The fulfilling of the God's Law in us who walk not after the flesh (carnal mind = sin) but after the Spirit (new mind with God's Law written on the heart) (Rom 8:1). That the righteousness of the Law might be fulfilled IN US who walk not after the flesh (carnal mind = sin) but after the spirit (Rom 8:4; 6). Salvation is God fulfilling his Law in us saving us from sin. Finally the result of God's salvation can be seen as " Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus (Rev 14:12). God's people with the character of Jesus saved by faith through love. Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, whosoever commits sin is the servant of sin. If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed. (John 8:34-36)

If you are partaking of the New Covenant and you have been born again and are walking in the Spirit. You will not steal right and murder? Great let’s look at what you have just said. These are part of God’s Law right (the 10 commandments). You have just agreed that if you are following God under the New Covenant then you will not murder and steal. So let’s look at all of God’s Law applying the same thinking (Ex 20:1-17). This indeed is the new covenant experience spoken of in Jer 31:31-34; Eze 36:26-27; Heb 8:10-12; 10:16-17.

[SUP]33[/SUP]I will put my law in their minds, and write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. No more shall every man teach his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for they all shall know me, from the least of them to the greatest of them, says the Lord. For I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more.” This is the law of love to God and to our neighbour.

So now under the new covenant when God changes our heart; we will love God and our neighbour.

if we love God we will not steal
if we love God we will not murder
if we love God we will not commit adultery
if we love God we will not lie
if we love God we will honour our parents
if we love God we will not covet
if we love God we will have no other gods except our God who loves us
if we love God we will not make unto any idols
if we love God we will not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain
if we love God we will Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy as he asked us to!

God’s Law has always been central to both the Old and the New Covenant. It is only by the operation of God as we have Faith in His Word that God changes our hearts so that we can love him and love our neighbour that we can walk in his ways. This is why Jesus says its only if you love me we can keep hid commandments (John 14:15)

Psa 51:10 Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.
Psa 51:11 Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me.
Psa 51:12 Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit.
Psa 51:13 Then will I teach transgressors thy ways; and sinners shall be converted unto thee.
Love is the fulfilling of the God’s Law.

I love Jesus and want to follow Him how about you?

God bless

There is no such thing as hyper grace.....this is a moronic misnomer invented by the workers for salvation...there is God's unsurpassable grace which saves and then out bounds our sin....now that is the end of the story!
Dcon

Movements are given names for a reason...

Word of Faith ....... you speak what you want in full faith and God will give it to you. The Santa Clause syndrome.

Hyper Grace ....... It's God's grace but taken to a point where God does all the work and we do nothing.

Easy Believism ........ we make it very easy to believe since we get to do nothing and God does all the work.

Now... You cannot deny that both you and Others here are constantly saying that FAITH plus WORKS is an insult to God.
UnderGrace says this all the time and you agree since you Like her posts and say it yourself.
So, basically, you're saying that FAITH PLUS WORKS is a SIN. (since it's an insult to God)

If that's what you believe, then you belong to the HYPER GRACE movement. It's a MOVEMENT within the Church.
It sounds really nice and keeps people going to Church.

I hear that Catholics are scared into going to Church (which is not even true)
In the hyper Grace movement, people are told NOTHING is expected of them and they could still be saved !! What could be better to our human ears and mind !!

Now, I know that you and Grace and MMD and Stone and UnderGrace and all the Others are not saying we SHOULD sin...
However, when you say that WORKS are an insult to God..

Doesn't that sound to you like you're preaching AGAINST works ???

Think about it.

Fran, what is your definition of grace?
Stone,
I find it very difficult to keep up with this thread.
I'm sorry if you've ever asked me questions to which you've recd no reply.
Will answer post no. 21948 later on --- it'll take more time.

What is grace?

The question is almost funny. As you well know, books have been written on this.
The easy answer is our unmerited favor from God because God loves us.

I like to think of it like this:
If we have a creator, who created us out of His own free will, that means that He could control us in any way He would deem fit.
He deemed to give us free will, an attribute He also has since He created us in His image.

This free will allows us to love Him willingly as He loves US willingly.
We cannot EARN anything of our own since He is the Almighty.
ANYTHING we get from God is because of GRACE, His love for us, who are nothing compared to Him.

I used to teach kids about the ant farm.
Quick...:

There's the Jesus ant on one side of the farm and the satan ant on the other side.
God made all the ants, but loves those on the Jesus side that are gathered to Him.
God forgives all their mistakes because He loves His Son and He loves them too.
But they still have to do their work. They still have to build their homes and gather food
and be nice to each other and help each other.
If they don't do what they're supposed to and what the Jesus ant tells them to, it might make
God angry because He see the ant as being very ungrateful toward His love.

The ants on the satan side are doing all the same "works", but their works count for nothing.

Sorry for the childish "lesson" I used to do but kids can't understand about righteousness and all that.
And sometimes creating a picture in the mind is just easier even for me...

Later...

Faith plus works to EARN SALVATION OR KEEP IT is a false gospel.

Works after having been born again is a natural outflow of God's love and A FRUIT OF BEING SAVED.

However, people can still be saved and not yet display any fruit besides being sealed by the Holy spirit.

Why is that so hard to understand?

Ants in the ant farm obey their queen or get killed.

Why does God love the ants in Jesus side only? How does the story truly teach the gospel of grace? What happened to Jesus death on the cross? The fact Jesus came from Heaven and died for us?

I would use the analogy of railroad tracks....the poor side and the rich side of town. Would people chose to be materially poor but surrounded by love, or to live in wealthy houses with swimming pools empty of anyone but self?

Grace would be when you chose to live in the rich side of town, get robbed and beaten up. However God sends church members from the poor side to bandage your wounds and care for you anyway, even though you used to laugh at them for being poor and almost run them over with your car,

You contribute nothing to your salvation (one time event :D) except the sin that made it necessary." Jonathan Edwards
And you wonder why folks say you believe you don't have to do anything?

Posting stuff like this all day, & then say, "yes we will have works."

I responded to conviction.

I came to Him. (But He made it easy & plain as day)

I had to confess & repent.

I had to accept Christ as savior & LORD.

I don't glory in that, because God did everything to draw me to Him. But when He saved me, He gave me power to become His son, & commit to Him the way He wants me to.

In Christ I have the ability, so I am without excuse to walk in faithfulness & live by faith every day.

I have no excuse not to believe, for God is faithful.

Yet every day I must choose to walk in newness of life. I must choose to keep the old man dead.

It is easy, because His yoke is easy, & His burden's light.

Those that do nothing but hide their faith in the ground will not survive.

Why is that so hard to understand?

So, tell me, what part of this post says that?!?

Here's the thing about works.

The just shall LIVE by faith. That means the rest of our lives.

We're saved by grace through faith. Through means throughout our lives.

James says faith without works is dead. So to have living faith, godly works must follow faith.

A very rough analogy would stipulate that more godly works means more faith, & less means less.

So, to put it in very simple terms, godly works does not keep our salvation alive. They are merely the "gas gauge" of how much faith we have.

When there's no godly works due to disobedience & willful rebellion, then faith is dead.

It is then, & only then, that we can lose our salvation, because we quit living by faith, one of the two major "musts" of salvation.

Every christian MUST 1. accept God's gift of grace (Jesus) AND 2. live by faith in Christ to be saved, & remain saved. Stop either one, & it's over, unless we repent.

Oh for goodness sakes Ariel.

You want me to tell the ENTIRE story?
Why?
You think Stone doesn't know it?

Also, kids don't graps concepts too well at an early age.
They don't understand about the other side of the tracks.

It depends how OLD THEY ARE.
You should know this.
The other side of the tracks is a CONCEPT.
ANTS ARE REAL. You could see them and touch them.

Do you know the one about the birds in the farmhouse?
The ants going over the hill?

Maye we could start a class for the novices and treat them like little children?

UFFA!!

Hi mailmandan,

Well to be honest the claims from the section above are so silly that it really does not need any comment at all but I will just provide a few for those that may be new to God’s Word. Why would there need to be a command anyone to keep God’s Sabbath when God already gave all his commandments to His people already?
Sabbath keeping with all it's rules and regulations, was part of a covenant with Israel (Exodus 16:23; 31:12-18; 35:1-3; Leviticus 19:30; 23:1-44; Numbers 28:1-10; 29:39-40; I Chronicles. 23:30-31; II Chronicles 31:2-4; Jeremiah 17:21) that is not applicable to Christians under the New Covenant (Colossians 2:16-17).

Where in the New Testament does it also say that we are to keep any of the 1[SUP]st[/SUP] four commandments which are our duty towards God (Ex 20:1-11)?

So if we do not see any of the first 4 commandments that are our duty to God in the New Testament does that mean I can go and worship Idol, have other Gods and use the Lords name in vain? Same as God’s 7[SUP]th[/SUP] Day Sabbath if we love God we will keep His commandments.
TEN COMMANDMENTS -- NEW TESTAMENT COMMAND
Have no other Gods Acts 14:15; Matthew 22:37
Do not make any idols 1 John 5:21; Matthew 22:37
Do not swear Matthew 22:37; James 5:12
Remember the Sabbath No sabbath . . . Col. 2:16
Honor father & mother Ephesians 6:1-2
Do not commit murder Romans 13:9-10; 1 John 3:15
Do not commit adultery Romans 13:9-10; 1 Corinthians 6:9-10
Do not steal Romans 13:9-10; Ephesians 4:28
Do not bear false witness Romans 13:9-10; Colossians 3:9-10
Do not covet Romans 13:9-10; Ephesians 5:3

Jesus is our example in all things and all the disciples after the death of Jesus all kept the 7[SUP]th[/SUP] Day Sabbath according to God’s commandment.
- Disciples kept the sabbath the day after Christ's death doesn't help sabbath keeping!

Show me one bible verse in all of whole of God’s Word that says we are commanded to no longer keep God’s 4[SUP]th[/SUP] commandment and to keep Sunday worship as a Holy day? Here is a hint there are not scriptures because Sunday worship is a man-made tradition over the Word of God.
Colossians 2:16 - So let no one judge you in food or in drink, or regarding a festival or a new moon or sabbaths, 17 which are a shadow of things to come, but the substance is of Christ.

PS Sorry did not finish the above....

The "Lords Day" has only ever been one day. It is the day that God's Word says it is and it is NOT Sunday... Jesus says..

Mark 2:27
Therefore the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath.

God bless everyone:)
I already showed you otherwise, but indoctrination runs deep. :(

Hi brother Dan :)

Do you know that Paul kept the Sabbath after he became a Christian? Acts 24 & 28 makes this clear. The question I always ask myself is, why would he still keep the Sabbath (and the feast days) if they were unimportant?

God bless friend

Nowhere does the Bible indicate that one of the Ten Commandments has been abrogated, or that the disciples or Jesus abandoned the weekly 7th-day Sabbath for Sunday keeping. Sunday worship is a man made tradition over the Word of God. We break any of God's Laws we are guilty of sin

God bless
Colossians 2:16-17 proves you wrong about the Sabbath. Sunday is the Lord's Day, 1st day of the week, after the Sabbath, in which Jesus rose from the dead (Matthew 1:1; Revelation 1:10). You need to step up to the New Covenant and get out from under the law. You have not perfectly obeyed ALL of God's laws 100% of the time so stop acting so self righteous. Which church do you attend? The SDA church or perhaps the worldwide church of God? (Armstrongism) These are cults.

Your post states only the person who has the Spirit through a continuing faith...so when Peter walked on water and his faith discontinued Jesus should've rightfully let him sink to the bottom of the sea.
Peter had not received the Spirit yet at that time.

As to whether or not we have to continue in faith (abide), it's what our entire race is based on - continuing and growing in trust.
God is very forgiving. Conversations about whether or not we have to abide (continue the race of trust/faith until we die) are unnecessary when God is so, so forgiving!

The easy answer is our unmerited favor from God because God loves us.
Do you consider John 3:16 the cornerstone of the Gospel?

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. John 3:16

If the cornerstone of the Gospel is that God so loved the world, then how did you hear that God loves man.

So if did God gave his only begotten Son that whosoever believed in Him should not perish, then who is going to have everlasting life? Those who believe in the only begotten Son or those who in believe in God?

I can't see any other answer than those who believe in the only begotten Son because the only begotten Son said to have faith in God.

I think what's hard to understand is that YOU don't have a full grasp on what "works" are.

To begin, it's not a dirty word. Seems like it's become a dirty word.
Maybe even blasphemous to some here.

Wonder what Jesus and Paul think of works:

Paul believes we are to have complete Faith in Jesus. Works are a result of OBEDIENCE to Jesus.

1 Corinthians 4:11-13 New American Standard Bible (NASB)

11 To this present hour we are both hungry and thirsty, and are poorly clothed, and are roughly treated, and are homeless;

12 and we toil, working with our own hands; when we are reviled, we bless; when we are persecuted, we endure;

13 when we are slandered, we try to [a]conciliate; we have become as the scum of the world, the dregs of all things, even until now.

Paul said many times that he works. He said that we are to do all our works to the glory of God...

Colossians 3:23-25New American Standard Bible (NASB)

23 Whatever you do, do your work [a]heartily, as for the Lord rather than for men,

24 knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward [c]of the inheritance. It is the Lord Christ whom you serve.

25 For he who does wrong will receive the consequences of the wrong which he has done, and [d]that without partiality.

And how are we obedient to Jesus?

Matthew 23:23 New American Standard Bible (NASB)

23 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint and dill and [a]cummin, and have neglected the weightier provisions of the law: justice and mercy and faithfulness; but these are the things you should have done without neglecting the others.

The "Others" what???

ALL THE OTHER THINGS that Jesus instructed us to do in all His teachings.
Mathew 5 to 7 is a good start.

WORKS are NOT a false gospel.
That's practically most of what Jesus talked about.

Can you please show me where Jesus spoke about something MORE than He did about how we are to behave or how we are to act?

You won't find it.

I only have one question about the Sabbath, who works seven days a week?
