Actually he could technically be a Maronite Catholic as well since they have had their own Patriarch in Antioch since the great schism when the Maronites decided to remain loyal the the See of Rome. But as for trustinthename's comment, they wouldn't have any reason to label themselves Eastern Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, or Catholic because the Church had not yet split at this time. At this time they didn't even have the gospels or the letters of Paul to go by; everything would have been passed down via word of mouth (tradition hint hint).
Well it depends... Five churches claim the Patriarchate of Antioch that I know of. Syriac Orthodox, Syrian Catholic, Maronite, Melkite Greek Catholic Church, and the Chalcedonian Greek Orthodox Church. I believe the Latins used to claim the patriarchate.

The Maronites didn't start naming Patriarchs until the 7th century. The Meklites and Non-Chalcedonians were one of the first schisms in the Patriarchate of Antioch.

(I'm Eastern Orthodox by the way people and my avatar is an Icon of St. Ignatius of Antioch. :p)

My first thought is that no christian denomination is inherently evil as long as they point to the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation. The Catholic denomination does things that makes me nervous as a believer and follower of Jesus. But I know that there are precious saints in this denomination because I have met them. Each denomination does things differently from the other. The Important thing to remember is that we are not called to follow a religion. We are called to follow the King, Jesus Christ.

Martin Luthers 95 theses are a good starting point to see some of the problems that the Catholic church has developed over the years. Maybe they have been addresed by now, not sure as I'm obviously not a member of that church.

Let's look at how many Biblical principals catholicism violates.. 1 They call a preist father, and the book of Matheew says that no ,man is to called father, 2 They pray to saints,, which is idol worship. 3 they go to a preist to intercede to God for them when Christ is our priest to intercede for us. 4. The preist tells you to say a few vain repetaive prayers that mean nothing and all is forgiven. 5 , They have graven images in the church.. threr may be more.. but these are the ones i can think of af hand
1) i call my dad father you callin me sacrilegious? 2) They don't pray to saints they ask them to help watch over them Eg. Michael he is the guardian angel Dude they pray to god not saints 3) They don't intercede to the priest they go to see what they can do for atonement and help with their repenting. 4) Those "vain repetitive" prayers are still prayers and not all is forgive you still have to repent from your sins in Catholicism. 5) Here is a definition of the word graven image just for your amusement: an object of worship carved usually from wood or stone : idol. Yes they have statues of people but they aren't placed as high as Jesus or are as beautifully made either so again your "fact" has been debunked. and last but not least 6 because i feel you need to be one uped 6) Get you facts straight and do a little research before you ill-speak ones religion. :D have a nice day and remember think before you post dissing other people's religion :D ok?

Lets look at them:
1) the context was in Jesus time people were setting up new sects and calling themselves "father" in that sect. Jesus was affirming only one true father who fathered the religion. He was not talking about Christian fathers in the legitimate priesthood

2)Saints are not prayed to. They are considered "alive" like other brothers and sisters in the faith and are asked that they pray for us. The saints themselves are not the object of worship.

3)The priest, like your other brothers and sisters in Christ can intercede for you. Jesus instituted the priesthood when he said to the apostles: Feed my sheep and what you loose in heaven will be loosed and what you bind on earth will be bound. They therefore have authority to make decisions on behalf of Christ with his authority.

4)Jesus repeated prayers himself: On the mount of olives Jesus prayed three times 'for the cup to be removed, but not his will but the father's'. The second time after being strengthened by an angel. Three times Jesus prayed for God to allow an easier path, but Jesus knew, "Yet not as I will, but as You will" (Luke 26:39)Learning From the Prayer Life of Jesus - Focus on the Family

Jesus also taught:
Matthew 7:7
[ Effective Prayer ] “Keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for. Keep on seeking, and you will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened to you.

5)The images came after the incarnation of Jesus who is the image of the father. The images of the church celbrate the incarnation of Jesus into human form. Also, they, historically, told people who could not read, the basic stories of the bible and introduced the essential people who lived with Jesus.

Exodus 20:4-6
(4) Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth:
(5) Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;
(6) And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.

Revelation 19:10
(10) And I fell at his feet to worship him. And he said unto me, See thou do it not: I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus: worship God: for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.

I'm not in the position to judge anybody especially when i'm not sure of. But my wisdom says that Catholicism have disobeyed the first commandment which is "You shall have no other gods before me" because of the saints and man-made statues that they worship and we should simple obey what the law of God says just as simple as that.

so, non-catholics object to images? Then they should never have a nativity scene (it tells exactly the same kind of story the images of Jesus and the saints tell) nor should they ever send Christmas cards with religious themes; or rather catholics say they SHOULD for the same reason they have images, namely to tell the story of Jesus and his people and to inspire the faithful.

I personally like the statues of jesus on the cross. A church should have crosses. The catholic churhes i have seen are beautiful creations. Unique statues, stained glass, beautiful wood work. Statues aint the problem, its if you kneel and pray to the statue. Also, the church is the body of christ not the building we meet in. I want my tithes and offerings going to reach others and do gods work not to make an extravagent meeting place.

The Roman Catholic church used to follow the bible correctly, but then man took over (the pope) turning it into a religion. Religion is something invented by man. It's man made.

Did you know? - The pope isn't even catholic. He's pagan! The pope has introduced a lot of Pagan traditions into the catholic church. These pagan traditions in turn leads to Baal aka - Satan.

(Below - necklace symbolic in 824-811 BC for pagan sun worship) (Below - Pope wears similar symbol)

(Below - symbols of Baal and Shamash worn by a Catholic Bishop)

(Pope below and to the right, a pagan fish god - the hat is identical, symbolizing a fish's mouth)

(Wearing hat of the Pagan God)

(Pagan God below)

(Pope wants one world religion)

(Pope standing with Pagans)

(Pope being annointed by Hindu priestess with the pagan “Sign of the Tilak”)

(Pope at a Masonic Lodge (Masons are Pagan)

(Pope with the World Council of Churches Orthodox, Swiss Reformed, “Catholic”, Lutheran, Methodist)

READ THIS WEBSITE: Are Catholics Idol Worshippers? (On Idol Worship)

(Revelations 17)

"The woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet, and adorned with gold and precious stones and pearls, having in her hand a golden cup full of abominations and the filthiness of her fornication. And on her forehead a name was written: MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND OF THE ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH"

Pope Symmachus (498-514) was a fornicator.
Pope Sergius (687-701) wanted to become pope so badly that he offered a bribe, one hundred gold pieces, to the emperor's representative to Italy.
Pope Stephen VII (VI) (896-897). He charged his predecessor (Pope Formosus) who was dead. Trial was arranged against Pope Formosus who was dead, they dug out his dead body and he was charged guilty, of coveting the papal throne. The corpse was stripped and the three fingers of its right hand chopped off. The body was then finally flung off into the River Tiber.
John XII (955-964) was the person who initiated the tradition of changing names upon elevation to the throne. He went after every woman he could find. He was reputed to have slept with his niece, his father’s ex-lover and even his own mother! He died the way he lived; from a heart attack while making love to a married woman.
Pope Gregory IX (1227-1241). Gregory was the pope who established the infamous Inquisition. In 1231 Gregory extended the legislation against heretics making them liable to the death penalty, which at that time, was to be burnt at the stake. In fact, the death penalty became mandatory for those who were condemned by the Inquisition for heresy.
Pope Sixtus IV (1471-1484) - He was involved in murder and he was dragged into war. Rome's financial resources were drained due to the war. Sixtus was the first pope to license the prostitution in Rome; prostitution brought a large income to the papacy. He introduced the of sale of indulgence for the dead. Thus living relatives of the dead, eager to help their loved ones in purgatory dug deep into their pockets to reduced the dead’s suffering.
* Pope Innocent VIII (1484-1492) illegitimate children by marrying them off into princely families.
* Alexander VI (1492-1503) both before and after he became pope had countless number of mistresses through which he fathered at least ten children.
* Leo X (1513-1521) The city of less than fifty thousand had seven thousand registered prostitutes! A large part of his income also came from the licensed brothels in Rome.
* Pope Julius III (1550-1555) a lover of pleasure, a glutton and a heavy gambler.
* Pope Alexander VIII (1689-1691) with the rise of Protestantism, pope’s behavior began to improve. Luther saw the immorality of the Roman church when he visited Rome, Luther said if there be a hell Rome is built over it. She is a seductress. The seat of the seductress is Waters. She is sitting on the people of the world. You go to any country and you will see world wide universal influence of Roman Catholicism. She is sitting on them, she is comfortable sitting on peoples of the earth, and here we see she is oppressing them, lording over the people instead of serving them.

The Roman Catholic Church is an institution of vast importance to politics from the very beginning. Constantine the Roman emperor regarded himself as the head of the church. It was called the Holy Roman Empire. The popes were engaged in war, Kings borrowed money from the popes; Rome has much influence with the kings of the earth.

You saw when Pope John Paul II died how all the world leaders attended his funeral including President George W. Bush and his wife. Bush was the first U.S president to attend a funeral of a pope. He said, “He said the services that brought kings, presidents and pilgrims from across the globe to Rome was a "powerful and moving reminder of the profound impact this pope had on our world."CNN.COM April 9, 2005

Verse 2. Look at her influence; the inhabitants of the earth made drunk with the wine of her fornication, meaning people were made drunk of her sins. Her influence is worldwide influence and for evil. Spreading sin, abominations where ever she goes. She seduce them with wine, with false doctrine, false worship. When a man is drunk the man believes anything, losing the senses, man believes a lie and believes the woman. You heard when you are trying to witness to a Roman Catholic they say, “I am a born Catholic and die catholic.” They are drunk; they have been seduced by the harlot of Rome.

Verse 3-4) So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness: and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet colored beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns.

The seven heads are seven mountains.

Re 17:9 And here is the mind which hath wisdom. The seven heads are seven mountains, on which the woman sitteth.

Seven Hills of Rome The hills upon which the ancient city of Rome was built, including the Palatine (traditional site of the founding of the city), Aventine, Caelian, Capitoline, Esquiline, Quirinal, and Viminal hills.

The heads are the symbols and the heads are the explanations of the mountains, literal mountains. It gives a very clear picture of the geographical location of the woman.

Beast supports the woman.

This harlot the Roman church is sitting on a beast. Who is this beast? See verse 8.

Verse 4: "And the woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet color, and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication":

Purple and Scarlet are the colors of the Catholic clergy.

The distinctive color of the woman is Scarlet. Rome's Catedrals, Notre Dame at Paris, the Staue pointed Cathedral at Milan, Saint Peter's at Rome, and you will find Gold, Silver, pearls, and all precious things. You will find all kinds of gifts from Kings, from emperors, queens, offerings from the richest of earth, wealth enough to make even kings envy.

Look at this church filled with gold, with silver and precious stones, and you will find that its official color is scarlet, scarlet in the hat of its cardinals, scarlet in the robes of its pontiff and priests, scarlet everywhere - a scarlet-colored church.
What was the color you saw during the funeral of pope John Paul II? The color of scarlet.

Why it is scarlet?
Remember just before the crucifixion of Christ.
Mt 27:28 And they stripped him, and put on him a scarlet robe.
They mocked him as the king, the Messiah. But this woman arrayed with purple and scarlet color is an expression of her authority and power.
This scarlet-clad woman is drunk with the blood of saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus.

(Verse 6)
It is the picture of the Roman Catholic, that in the name of Christ, causing the martyrdom of true saints, and thirsting after there blood till she is drunken by it. It happened in history and a day is coming again that she will persecute the true woman the bride of Christ, the church, this woman will drink the persecuting of God saints as a man drinks the taste of wine. She will be intoxicated with the martyr’s blood.

Are churches are beautiful because we see them as more than just a meeting place. They are where Christ is present in the Eucharist, and where the holy sacrifice of the Mass is offered. So we want to build the best church for God that we possibly can. That's why so many villages in Europe have beautiful churches, the people living their would rather have a beautiful church than a little extra food.

The people are the church, not the building.
The building is a place for us to gather, that's all. Just a place to gather.

God does not value material things. In the bible, Jesus says multiple times to put your trust in him and not in man-made things. A church is man made. There are churches that are visually pleasing to the eye, but this is not what God wanted. He does not want statues, stain glass windows, graven images of any kind. It says so in the bible.

God wants you to have a personal relationship with him through reading the bible and praying to him in the quiet of your own room. This is how he said it should be done.

The bible is the word of God. It's the truth and we are to follow what he says in it. Do not put your trust in priests, because they interpret the way they choose to and you can become too dependent on them. You have to read the bible and understand it for yourself. It is the Pope who decided to introduce certain traditions into the church, not God. You either choose the Priest & pope or God himself. You can't choose both.

I can tell you that the more I read the bible, the closer to God that I feel. I feel like my relationship with him is strengthening everyday.

With regards to the Eucharist - in the bible Jesus says to take the bread and wine in remembrance of him. It's to remember him by, nothing more. You are not saved by taking the Eucharist. For it says so in the bible.

I hope you take this with love. I don't mean any unkindness towards you, just wanted to share this with you.

Hope you have a great day.

Actually I can.

The Catechism ties good works in with the section on justification and sanctification, but the gist of it is that good works are meritorious for our salvation because they are united with the grace of God and the sufferings of Christ. Like I said the Catechism is over 800 pages and printed in type so small you need a magnifying glass. So you would be hard pressed to pick a topic even vaguely related to Christianity that it doesn't cover in some way.

You can look up topics from the catechism for free online from either the Vatican's website the USCCB's website and not to mention hundreds of individual parish websites that have the catechism posted. Or if you want you can spend six dollars and buy one of the cheap editions of it at Borders or Barnes and Noble.
God bless you, brother for speaking up for the church. I wish I had your patience and perseverance. When I accepted Christ in 2005 I had to decide whether to be evangelical or to return to the church I was raised in. First I read the bible, then I considered the arguments for and against catholicism and found that all the arguments against them are based on misconceptions about catholic teaching and practice. The whole while I also prayed to God to show me what I should decide and I believe that I did receive some signs and so now i am a staunch believer in the faith and also know how my faith is supported in scripture. I do not have the patience to battle it out in a forum though, so God bless you for all you are doing.

And yet we find in the Scriptures detailed descriptions of the Temple Our Lord wanted built for Him by Solomon. Doors covered in gold, ornate statues, figures of cherubim and seraphim...

Mark 14:4-9 seems appropriate at times.

Yes, Where God in the Holy of Holies delt with his people.

Yet notice when Christ was crucified. The curtain was torn in two. No longer did mankind need to enter the holy of holies via a priest to mediate from us. Christ, having completed the perfect sacrifice now mediates personally at the right hand of God.

Scripture states our bodies are the NT. God lives in our hearts. He wants to be with us every day. Not in a building made by the hands of men.

why does the pope wear a mitre? It is not as shown a fish symbol, but is a sign of the flames on the heads of the early church at pentecost.

Why does the catholic church use the sun symbol? Because a Messianic prophesy in malachi tells of the Sun of Righteousness rising on us.
Malachi 4:2
“But for you who fear my name, the Sun of Righteousness will rise with healing in his wings. And you will go free, leaping with joy like calves let out to pasture.

I've found that all Christian religions have a piece of the Truth. Because each Christian religion believes they are the Way, the Truth and the Light; they tend to exult themselves above others. What a pity. There is only One above all Christian religions who has the authority to say with power, "Follow Me." His name is not a religion. His name is Christ, Son of the Living God.

I am not Catholic, but because in my ignorance I spoke against that religion for many years; I am compelled to share this witness;

In the beginning of Adam and Eve; Adam called Eve the mother of all living. But because they heard the word of and did not believe, all the generations that followed after them were born into the teaching of iniquity; the teaching of sin that leads to death.

Mary heard the Word of God and believed, and a child of God was conceived and born onto Him. From that day to this, those who hear the Word of God and believe, a child of God is born (born-again). This is why Jesus said to John, "Here is your mother" Those who hear the word of God and believe are delivered from death, born again into life eternal. This is the difference between children of Eve and the children of Mary.

If for no other reason than this; there should be no indifference because Catholics hold her dear to their hearts and do not fully understand. Many of the doctrines of the Catholic religion I do not agree with; but I do not condemn them because they believe in Jesus.

Let me say that again; I do not condemn them because they believe in Jesus.

If you are Christian, should you be condemned because you believe in Jesus?
