Like Cabbage Rolls but do not like all the work that goes into them? This soup is for you then....

What you will need

1 lb of ground beef or turkey
1 1/2 cup cooked rice
1 lb shredded cabbage
1 28oz can of stewed tomatoes
4 cups beef stock
1 can of tomato paste
1 onion, diced
salt, pepper, garlic powder and Italian seasoning to taste

I prefer to use a cast iron dutch oven, slow cooker works well too
start be browning ground beef or turkey, drain fat
add diced onion
add tomato and stock chopped cabbage
add tomato paste
add seasoning bring to boil, then allow to simmer for 2 hrs or longer on stove top if your using a cast iron dutch oven, if your using a slow cooker set on low and allow to cook all day or on high for 4-5 hrs

this is a very tasty soup and great budget meal that tastes like a million bucks

enjoy

This is perfect, I love cabbage rolls but I hate the work involved, so this is great!

Looks easy to make lowfat to boot (which is awesome because I need to go on a diet)

This just couldnt be more timely for me.

Thanks, I will look forward to trying this recipe.

God bless you

Hey, Im assuming you dont add the rice (until last)?

Like after its all cooked up?

Seems like a no brainer I guess, but these do cook for an hour with the rice in them (when rolled) so I thought I would ask

Im cooking it in an enameled cast iron dutch oven (not a crock pot)

And we would have plenty left over ladybug (if you meant here) given my husband will go to town picking out the cabbage in this one (lol!)

Dinner will be torture for him this evening, (because its what I like night) and what he must suffer lol

We had this soup last week. Definitely add the rice last, cooked. We added raw rice and used the soup to cook the rice. That was a mistake as it made it too thick. I would also cube the cabbage and not shred it. The soup has a good taste to it and is a good substitute for cabbage rolls which are labor intensive to prepare. Oh, use a couple bay leafs.

thanks all,

cabbage is one of hubbies and my favorite foods,
only problem,
even when I think cabbage, I get gas!!!

but, it is definitely worth it -
we do a lot of 'stir-fry', can't beat it.

By the way this was great, I added two bay leafs as tourist advised, and I added two TBSP of splenda brown sugar sweetner (per my own taste) and when I served it I didnt serve it as a soup, I used a slotted spoon, and just put it over rice with a big dollop of sour cream and I LOVED IT!

This is a keeper for me

Hubby made me pull out as much cabbage as I could LOL!

He was not impressed only because he gets grossed out at the presence of any kind of vegetable that he can see, and there was just too much to see rofl!

I reccomend this recipe though, thanks!

ya I been working nights, and have not check the thread, I found it not to bad when I added the cooked rice with everything else but prob would be better if I added it later on, putting it in uncooked turns the soup into a thick block lol,
I am glad people are enjoying it and yes bay leaf, chili powder makes a difference I added to the last batch I made
I still prefer my cabbage shredded

and I will be posting more recipes soon
