I have heard so many stories about where the recipe for Red Velvet Cake came from. Here is what I was told by my friend:

She was working for a dentist in Denver, Co. This dentist went for a vacation in Florida where they were served a piece of the Red Velvet Cake and liked it so much they asked the chef for the recipe. He sent the recipe to them. Later he sent a bill for $1,000 for the recipe. The dentist went to an attorney who said that he had to pay. The dentist was so angry he sent the recipe to anyone who would print it.

What is the story you have heard?

I've heard a similar story about someone who wanted a chocolate chip cookie recipe...Mrs. Field's? Don't remember. :)

But I do love red velvet cake, though I kinda stink at making it! lol

Hi, had been working on a writing project about WWII rationing recipes and someone told me that the Red Velvet Cake was a by-product of the rationing of chocolate during the strictest times of the war. Not sure if that's true.
