Hi,

Long ago, around in 2003, i read a street tract about this subject. How do this religion got this name as Hinduism?? how we Indians became Hindus?? Who gave this name to us?? Is there anything mentioned like this in vedas or so called Hindus scriptures?? But nothing mentioned as HINDU in any scriptures.

I understood this from that tract..! Hindus name was given by the Foreign rulers / countries who ruled Bharat. The people who lived beside the river of Sindhus are called as Hindus. So, the religion Hinduism is actually called as sanathana dharma. Meaning is "An external way". Its not a religion.

What is your idea on this??

Being an indian doesn't automatically make you an Hindu, following hinduism does, I'm guessing the reason it may seem that most indians are considered hindu, is because india is over 80% hindu, so says wiki.{For more information} (Click the Link).
So i guess you being from india know more about the history of why it is so largely the religion of practice in your country. However the question of whether you yourself are one depends solely on your own beliefs. I don't know a great deal about hinduism nor am I currently interested, for the time being, but I may take a look in the future, not only at that but islam and other world religions as well. I am no hindu, nor will I ever be else I never knew God, my God, the God of Israel, the God of Creation.

The term 'hinduism' is a word that was invented by western philosophers of religion to describe a diversity of religious traditions. Christians' also got their name from outsiders (Acts 11:26), but usually don't object to being called that.

I find many people are confused when they ask am I this or that, all because they read something or interested in something. You can be interested in crime solving, or reading books or tracts even about different things, it therefore don't mean you are what you read. Until you start practicing what you read, then you can say to yourself that you are this or that.

Anyone can read about something, anyone can even take interest in something, but until you start practicing or doing what you were reading or interested about. you are not what ever you are reading about. It's like for example: let's just say you are unsaved in christian terms, and you were seeking and wanting to know about God, why' what's and hows and so on. all the seeking and the interests don't make you a christian. But as soon as you Gave your heart to God, become born again, accept Jesus and believe he died for you on the cross. and woship him only. thats when you become christian. So therefore you not Christian until you start practicing and doing the actions of what you were originally reading, seeking about.

In india, as you will know, many indian culture woship many gods, " noticed I put the word gods in lowercase? " There is only one God. That can do all things. The gods india that many worship, whether it's an animal, or a statue, or a person. Sorry to say, But non of them can perform true miracles, true healing, and most of all, those gods did not die on a cross to save mankind. I would like to go on, but many people here don't like long reads. and many get bored easily. But God bless and hope you find your answers to your questions. but my advise, look to the one person who knows all, the one who created all things, and the one who is the truth. God!

Didymus, Christians did not just get their name from outsiders. In Acts 11:26 it says, the disciples were first called Christians at Antioch. It does not say that other people called them Christians but says they were first called Christians. Christians, meaning, followers of Christ. But you have the right to believe that, I just disagree that's all.

Anyway, as Richie said, Jesus Christ died on the cross for the sins of the world. I will also add that the resurrected from the dead on the third day. Christians do not worship a God who is dead, but one who was dead and is now alive. He died on the cross because he loved us and also to take away the wrath of God that was upon us. If you believe in Him, you will have eternal life and be rescued from the bondage of sin. I will ask you a question with all the gods that Hindus worship, how can they serve so many? Yes, they tend to pick out a main god among the gods they serve, but still their belief system is polytheistic. Also, those gods they serve tend to be made human, with human vices, etc but Jesus despite being a man for a time after leaving his residence in heaven, did not sin, did not give into worldly vices. Also, as Richie you have to practice what you preach. If you believe in something, you usually do not want to keep it to yourself, you tend to try to spread. Also, as one of Richie's examples says, just because you read a book does not necessarily mean you are a follower of the author who wrote the book, believe what the book is saying, etc. God bless and may He show you the way to Him.
