You heard wrong my friend. Predestination is concerning those who are already in Christ. Those in Christ are predestinated to receive the future adoption, which is the redemption of the body.

God the Father did not crucify his Son. God stepped out of the way so Satan would initiate the cross. Satan was trying to eliminate the promised seed before his head would be bruised. Little did he know, the cross would be the means of bruising his head.

John 3:16 has no mention of the cross. It has no mention of the death, burial, and resurrection for sins. We can read into John 3:16 with the knowledge we have now.
