Hey everyone!! The title is self-explanatory. I am looking to switch from Norton 360,which I currently have, and expires in another month, to a FREE antivirus. What I would like to know is:

1.) Have/ do any of you use a free antivirus and/ or free firewall?

2.) How does it work for you, and what antivirus or firewall do you use?

3.) Do you prefer the paid or free versions? Why?

4.) Could you please recommend some free anti-viruses for me to try?

5.) Has using a free anti-virus or firewall ever given you problems that you didn't have when using a paid version, or vice-versa?

6.) Which free antivirus and firewall is best, in your own opinion or experience? And which paid version is best in your own opinion or experience?

Thank you for any input you can give me!! I priced Norton 360 at Walmart and it is $92 there! Way too expensive for me, so please keep in mind I'm looking for a FREE anti-virus AND a free firewall also, but please feel free to recomment paid versions also. I need all the input I can get because my Norton 360 expires soon!! Thank you all and God bless!! :)

I use AVG Free Antivirus. Have used it on my current and previous 2 laptops. Never had a problem. It has a good reputation.
I don't fuss with Firewalls. Windows has one built in.
Another good thing to add on top of your antivirus is Malwarebytes. It's free and even many professionals use it to help with difficult problems with virus/adware/malware/etc...

Ugly, thanks for your answer. :) I have both Malwarebytes and Superantispyware on my computer, along with SpywareBlaster and Ccleaner.

Comodo will give you a FULL protection of your PC, NO other programs needed.
I wouldn't rely on the firewall that comes with Windows.

https://antivirus.comodo.com/downlo...037&key7sk1=206414&key1sk1=ors&key1sk2=Google

didymos, believe me, I'm THOROUGHLY researching everything before I make a final decision!! LOL. I was gonna go with ZoneAlarm's free firewall until I found out it comes bundled with adware, AND changes my homepage AND installs its own search engine!! Uh-uh, not happening! Thanks for the link to Comodo. :)

If you don't watch porn, or click peoples links... you just avoided 90% of the viruses on the internet... The newer the version the better, the more popular the service the worst off it is.... AVG is very good, put it on my moms after she started torenting and got too many virus' to count... It was decent.

Norton's my favorite for simplicity, but it tends to become Trojan'd the most in my experience...

One of my best friends will put his life on the line, saying that Bull Guard is the best you can buy.

Microsoft defender is decent for windows 8... But can be tricky for some people to manipulate...

The only paid version I have listed is Bull Guard...

99% of peoples problems comes from not doing a security check every night... You let a virus sit on your computer is like letting one sit in your lungs... It just gets worse, never better...

T, I am fanatic about doing security scans every day! I always install my windows updates and make sure they're current..My mom never does them (cuz she doesnt know what they're for, lol) and she's always getting viruses. :/ I run scans with malwarebytes and superantispyware every day.

My mom tends to send me emails with attachments that like 50 people have been sent and forwarded to her. Since I know viruses can reside in attachments, I simply delete her email without even opening it. I have WOT (web of trust) on my computer too and I love it because it shows me what links are safe and which aren't. I do not download anything ever and I dont click on links that people provide, and no, I don't watch porn..lol :) Thanks for your input.. :)

I agree woth Dydimos, Comod is best and, if something happens, it was you misusing it.

Use Linux!

Free OS is cheaper than paying MS. Windows has some advantage for the aplications but Linux doesn´t bother you too much. Buy a PC for internet and use Canaima, for instance, to surf the www.

Get it, for free, here:

Paranoid? NO. Concerned because my anti-virus expires soon and I'm scrambling to find another one? YESSIR!! LOL!! My HP came with windows 7 and it does work rather well. If I wanted to try Linux, but didn't like it and wanted to switch back to windows 7, could I do that?

If you go with the free versions I would pay the xtra $20 or so to have continuous coverage and upgrades. It doesn't take long for some viruses to do their nasty deeds.
I've bought Norton 360 for less than $40 off Amazon for 2 users.

I hate linux fanboys... If you can't write C++ there is no reason to get a linux... All your scriptkiddie fanboy stuff can be done on a mac or windows...

That wasn't directed towards anyone just a rant... But the next sentence is...

If someone is just interested in getting an anti-virus, why do you try to upsell your linux on them? Thats like a 5year old going into a shop because the chain on her bicycle is broken... And the repair man goes, well if you had a manual shifting lamborghini this would not happen...

To the OP many services such as AVG, BullGuard, Norton, Windows Defender, ect. have an automatic search schedule that you can set for like 2:00 a.m. each day, or once a week... Please tell your mom not to click on email links that people send her... I can guarantee that's how she has gotten virus'.

Linux is not for just anybody..you gotta know what your doing to use it.
But anyway, I've been using Microsoft Security Essentials and Windows Firewall for years, never had a problem. 8.1 has MSE pre installed now so I don't even have to worry about it, cant remember if 7 did. Malware bytes for malware scans occasionally.
If you don't visit dodgy porn sites, warez sites, download clean software, don't check suspect emails you pretty much should be right. Haven't had a virus in years. Oh, and always custom install software, always.

hahahah!

In that case I can "resell" AVIRA, it is German inside. And has it but, if U don´t pay it, dont expect complete yearly "protection". Kaspersky is good but somewhat Russian and made in Canada.

Fyi, there are probably more germs on your keyboard than viruses online.
Alright, carry on... ;)
