Don't believe what the US Secretary of Health and Human Services tells you. Don't believe what the news media are so ready to parrot. Haiti is not the poorest country in the southern hemisphere. Why? Most notably because Haiti is in the northern hemisphere. They are experts at molding popular opinion, but even they can't move the equator north 1400 miles.

Just sayin.....

lol!! They're just reading off the teleprompter thingie. The guy that writes the script could throw in a line about the anchors smelly feet and the anchor would prolly say it anyway.

The first person I heard this from was a veteran newswoman, Pat Harvey, on KCAL 9 news in Los Angeles. Admittedly she was on location chatting with people giving donations for Haiti, and was thinking on her feet. But two things: 1) she is in the thinking-on-your-feet business and has been for decades, and 2) she just ought to know better. But after I heard it three times, I did a bit of research and discovered that the US Secretary of HHS Department, Kathleen Sebelius, had started the whole thing by saying it in a news conference on Thursday. And since she MUST know cuz she is an important government official, the media just repeat it like gospel.
