I've been a smoker pretty much since I was 16. I hate this dirty, filthy habit, but I am hooked really bad. Hubby also smokes, and it's a force of habit to light up in the morning with coffee, after you eat, when you are nervous, etc. I hate the smell, and even worse? The price. We could be saving the money that we spend on cigarettes to buy our new kitchen floor that I so badly want! I looked up "What does the Bible say about smoking cigarettes?" and got mostly the same answer. They say while it does not say in the Bible "Thou Shall not Smoke" ... it does say the following:

"
What does the Bible say about smoking? You will find no text that says, "Thou shalt not smoke." Tobacco is not mentioned in the Bible for a very good reason; its use is of comparatively recent origin and was not known in Bible times. In fact, Western Europe was introduced to it from the Americas in the sixteen century. In 1613 John Rolfe sent the first shipment of Virginia tobacco from Jamestown to England. Sir Walter Raleigh also imported it from the island of Tobago (West Indies) during the later half of the sixteenth century. The practice of smoking tobacco came from the native American Indians and the Carib Indians of Tobago. These practices were done as part of their religious rites. It is interesting to find that the root of smoking tobacco came from heathen religions. Columbus was amazed when he saw the Indians of the Caribbean drawing smoke through their nostrils with a Y-shaped pipe called a "tabaca", hence the name tobacco.Satan is always trying to destroy God's crowning creation "man", anyway that he can, and addicting people to tobacco is one of those ways. If Satan cannot destroy us other ways he uses this "little nasty habit" to slowly kill us over the years. Young people are the most vulnerable as many movie and television productions glamorize drinking and smoking. They never show the long term effects this habit has on people.Coming from a background as a medical technologist I saw so many people in the hospital, suffering needlessly, as the result of their smoking. Most people are aware of the major list of diseases caused by the longterm use of tobacco which are lung, throat and mouth cancer, heart disease and emphezema. However, Satan deceives them into thinking it won't happen to them. Young people just don't think about their latter years, and this "little habit" finally becomes so enslaving it becomes a"big monster" and is very difficult to get free from without Christ.I have known of a lot of Christians who smoked and really just did not want to give this pleasure up. The Bible does say there is pleasure in sin for a season but in the end we shall reap the result of that sin. The Bible says Moses chose to turn against the pleasures he could have enjoyed to follow God. (Hebrews 11:24-25 says "By faith Moses, when he was come to years, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter; Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season.")Galatians 6:7-8 tells us that in time we shall reap corruption from our sinful habits.Gal 6:7 Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.Gal 6:8 For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.Tobacco is considered physically harmful because it contains nicotine, a drug which in its pure state is highly poisonous. It definitely is not only habit forming but addictive as well. It is ludicrous to hear the tobacco company executives state otherwise. We all know that their statements were made only because it would produce huge monetary losses for them to state otherwise. They need only ask someone who has tried to get free of this evil if they think it is addicting or just merely a bad habit. The Bible teaches us as Christians that we are to be clean and holy -- spirit, soul and body. Our bodies are called the "temple of the Holy Spirit". Every Christian is accountable to God for the condition of his body.1 Cor 6:19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?1 Cor 6:20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.Rom 12:1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.Rom 12:2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.Someone might ask, "Why did God make tobacco since it is responsible for so many deaths?" Not onlydoes it destroy the lives of those that smoke but we know also from research that "second hand smoke" is also a leading cause of sickness that leads to deaths, especially in small children. Pregnant mothers also endanger the lives of their unborn with this evil habit. We should also mention the many lives and property that are lost to fires caused by a careless smoker. It is never God who is to blame for evil, as the tobacco plant has its virtues. There are useful chemical products made from tobacco which include those which kill insects and fungi. If man would spend the time and research for the good use of tobacco, I believe he would discover some healing properties in this plant, outside of smoking it. Satan always perverts the things in this world for evil use, while God has plans for them to bless mankind. As Christians there should be no place in our lives for this evil habit. This "little fox" is a killer and we should pray for those to be free whom we know have this problem. If you are in this trap, there is a way out. If you sincerely want to be free, tell God about your desire and your resolve. Ask others to pray for you too. Open the door of your heart heavenward and the Holy Spirit, will bring you both strength and victory. "

Please remember, I am brand new to living a life solely with God, so I am just learning about everything in the Bible that I possibly could.

My friend let me tell you a little about habbits like smoking. Firstly if you despise it and you want to stop then by all means do whatever you can do to do. Go to God get help to quit pray or spend time in the word. I know they have things to help ppl stop stop smoking like smoking patches and they have vapes now although those have a little tobaco in them.

But according to smoking and God smoking is like anything else, it is only a sin when it becomes more important to you than God. I have a severe caffeine addiction, I mean a really really severe caffeine addiction. I require several LARGE cups of coffee just to make it through the day and believe me I have done everything I can to quit, I have prayed and begged God for help I have had many ppl pray for me I have even tried to wean myself but caffeine is a drug, not an illegal one but it is in fact an addictive substance. This caffeine addiction is such a strong foe in my life that I literally have no power over it I cannot win, however even though this monster is so very strong my love for God is far greater. I gaurantee the devil is rolling on the floor laughing because he thinks he has won because of what great strength he thinks he has over me with this addiction, but when I think of this I simply cannot help but shake my head and chuckle a little saying it isn't strong strong enough. this addiction however strong it may be however much power it seems to have over me is simply not strong enough. it was obviously given to me to weaken my faith and my relationship with God but instead it made us grow stronger because we fought it together, we got knocked down over and over and over again but I said to God everry time I believe in you i know how strong you are and I got back up with defiance.

think of this addiction of yours as not something to weaken you but to help you and God grow strong together

I don't know if this works, but I had a psychology teacher that said if you want to quit smoking he has used this weird technique to get people to stop.....Picture the cigarette in your mouth like you are smoking it, now picture it turning into a worm....every time you put a cigarette in your mouth it turns into a worm.... most people can't put them in their mouths after he tells them that....
I have never smoked, but I will pray for you, that you find your answer.

A serious smoker since the age of 20. Smoked 40-50 a day. A few months I decided that I want to live so dramatically cut back to 8-10 a day. Every few days I would cut out another cigarette. I have not had a smoke since Feb 17 of this year.

I still think about smoking and have cravings but God has helped me. My wife prays for me every day and supports me. It is unbearable for me to think that I will not smoke again for the rest of my life so I take it one day at a time. I will not smoke - today.

It is good to be alive.

U may have already tried this...but it worked for me - nicorettes. U can get your fix of nicotine but without a lot of the other ugly toxic additives..

Anyway i replaced one bad haibit with perhaps a 'neutral' habit - 6 or 7 years chewing lol - anyway it was a stepping stone to give up the whole business.

best o luck!

I have a relatively little time without smoking (4 months) and I am afraid to present myself as triumphant even if I no longer feel the need to smoke because this is not my first attempt to quit smoking (I lasted even 8 months without cigarettes and after, I got back to the addiction).

My biggest motivation to stop smoking is that I want to have babies in the future and I read that if you are a smoker you must clean your body during two years before getting pregnant. I will not wait two years because I have a friend who had her baby much much earlier and the baby is fine. My other attempts to stop smoking were motivated by the partaking of the Eucharist. You need to prepare yourself spiritually and physically before receiving the Eucharist.

Anyway, I know it is not easy especially if your husband smokes (mine too smokes). Be convinced that smoking is a sin and it only causes damage. If you can't stop smoking overnight than I guess you can reduce them but if you ask me, I prefer to stop all of a sudden because whether is one cigarette or ten you still intoxicate yourself. So, better none, than one.

Also, when I stopped smoking I also started to make physical exercises, to eat healthier in order to change as much bad habits as I can. It helped me a lot and you will feel a lot better.

What else can I say? Avoid the activities that your brain relates with smoking. For example if when you go to coffees and restaurants you use to smoke, than avoid the coffees and restaurants. If you smoke because you get bored and are alone in the house, avoid to find yourself alone in the house with nothing to do. Try to occupy your time in such way so you don't have time to get bored and smoke.

I hope it helped.

Well, first off, it's not a sin. And secondly, anyone telling you it is had sure better not be overweight.... because the Bible DOES call gluttony a sin. LOL

But it IS dumb, dangerous to your health, dirty, smelly, and horribly expensive. To me, THOSE should be reason enough to quit.

Although some cannot help being fat, you have understand that there are medical problems and organ problems that can cause one to gain weight extremely fast. Also we do not know their situation and problems so thats why you can never judge a book by its cover

I agree that gluttony is a sin (and I believe smoking is too) but where does the Bible call gluttony a sin?

I used to smoke and God had me quit! :)

To me, it was wrong because it was an addiction. I couldnt quit when I wanted to and stay off it if I chose to. So I was not free - it was bondage, and not to Christ. Plus our body is a temple, then tobacco is like a demonic foul incense causing disease. Plus I was destroying my voice (I'm a singer) that should sing to God. It was not mine, but God's gift, and not given to me to destroy it. So that convicted me.

I was trying to quit for a while and I felt so miserable for promising God I would quit and continually failing. But one day in prayer, God said to me these words, not audibly but in Spirit - "I want you to take that box of cigarettes, throw it into the trash can, and never buy another package"... The instructions were so clear and since God has spoken directly to me... I could not but obey! I'd read before that, fasting helps with this addiction. And my husband warned me that coffee and cigarettes are friends. I still wanted to smoke terribly but I knew I had to hold on. I was on water fast for 3 days, on the third day I could feel that God rebuked the temptor and it came out. I knew it because the temptation was suddenly diminished. The desire for smoke was there but weaker, I could resist it... then for a time I was still attracted to the thing to fidget with something in my hands... finally it disappeared completely. So much time to undo the mess I've created myself!

Deuteronomy 21:20 And they shall say unto the elders of his city, This our son is stubborn and rebellious, he will not obey our voice; he is a glutton, and a drunkard.

Proverbs 23:21 For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty: and drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags.

These two witnesses seem to indicate that gluttony/overeating is on par with alcoholism before God!
Men usually look upon alcoholism as "greater" sin, but how surprising...

Now, don't get me wrong. I don't think the Bible means enjoying a meal is a sin. I believe, in this case, they COULD be talking of eating far beyond what we need becoming an excessive habit that we give in to... and THAT part being the sin. In such cases, I suppose anything we get hooked on or go nuts with could be considered sinful greediness.

People judge alcoholism a greater sin because the damages of alcoholism are more obvious and in most cases more tragic. But yes, both glutonny and alcoholism are sins.

Yes, amen. My husband says, if God didnt want us to enjoy food, He would have simply made things taste like wood... lol
"taste and see the Lord is good" - God wants us to enjoy life and you can figure that just by tasting the food He created. :)

No, I don't get you wrong. I just did not understand why do you think glutonny is a sin but not smoking. What is the difference between overeating and smoking? Don't they both seek a certain pleasure and aren't they both unhealthy?
