Just asking because I have heard different theories on who it might have been.

i gather that some liberal German schools of criticism attacked Johns's authorship in the last century or two (the same ones that say there are three Isaiahs, Daniel is a recent forgery, etc. etc.), but that all of their objections and issues were soundly addressed by conservative scholars, and that Johns's authorship is no longer in any serious scholarly question, but is almost universally accepted.

am not up on the details; that's just what i've been taught. would be happy to read discussion about what kind of specific objections were raised :)

sorry to have been facetious; could not resist.

Agree that it was the Apostle John. Over the years, I have read of how some attempt to discredit the Gospel of John because he wrote of things/events the other Gospels do not include. As well, MANY churches/denominations/movements do not adhere to some of what John wrote as being commandments from Christ.

John's Gospel, more than any of the others in my opinion, is the Gospel of Love. People can try to discredit it all they want, but it will remain the cornerstone account of the Gospel of Christ for me and my church.

96AD? It had to be written by 70AD, possibly sooner. There's no mention of the destruction of Jerusalem and its temple. That would be a huge oversight in trying to encourage fellow Jews turned Christians.
