Hi.

I have noticed that sometimes incorrect grammar can completely change the meaning of a post.
Also sometimes people can get a bit frustrated by incorrect grammar, but also different cultures and countries use
grammar in different ways.

So in the effort to, at least in part, satisfy my own mind on a certain matter, please can I have your
opinion as to which is correct:

The yolk of an egg IS white,
or the yolk of an egg ARE white.

Your answers would be greatly appreciated in the assistance of mutual understanding and world peace.

:)

Ps if you are a really bright spark with a degree in English then you might want to delay responding and give the
rest of us mere mortals a chance to reply first.

Sooooo. which is it folks, IS or ARE?

The yolk of an egg IS white.. that's the proper way to say it. :)

The word "Are" would be correct if you said the yolkS of an egg ARE white. Yolks indicates more than one egg..

I might word the plural form as...

The egg yolks are yellow.

or

The whites of eggs are white.

The yolk of an egg IS white - IS NOT correct since yolks are yellow

Ah someone with an English degree got there first.
Absolutely correct egg yolks are yellow, or sometimes green.
The moral of this little threads read very carefully before you reply to a post. :)

Ha! I knew it was a trick question.

Just common sense put to good use. Thanks for the fun, Miri. :D

Moral might also be said as: Think critically. That doesn't mean be critical. Means to think about what's being said or read carefully (as Miri points out) to see Truth from error. But first, we must know the Truth.

As a Christian, I've found that we have to put on our 'discernment caps or hats' when reading articles, writings, and books even from famous authors and pastors. Some may misuse the Word and purposely misinterpret the Word to support their agendas. One example of that is Rick Warren in The Purpose Driven Life. If someone is not studied in the Word, or read the Word for themselves, then they could very easily swallow his horse hash interpretations and extreme claims.

My first criminal justice class in college had a teacher that gave us this test on the very first day....How many would fall for this?

CAN YOU FOLLOW DIRECTIONS?
This is a timed test--you have 3 minutes only!
1. Read everything carefully before doing anything.
2. Put your name in the upper right-hand corner of this paper.
3. Loudly call out your first name.
4. Circle the word NAME in sentence two.
5. If you have followed directions carefully to this point, call out "I have.”
6. Draw five small squares in the upper left-hand corner.
7. Put an "X" in each square.
8. In your normal speaking voice, count from ten to one backwards.
9. Put a circle around each square.
10. Sign your name under the title of this paper.
11. After the title write, "Yes, yes, yes.”
12. Put a circle completely around the sentence number seven.
13. When you reach this point, loudly call out your full name
14. Put an "X" in the lower left-hand corner of this paper.
15. Draw a triangle around the "X" you just put down.
16. On the back of this paper, multiply 703 by 66.
17. Loudly call out, "I AM NEARLY FINISHED. I HAVE FOLLOWED DIRECTIONS.”
18. Draw a rectangle around the word “corner” in sentence six.
19. On the reverse side of this paper, add 8950 and 9805.
20. Put a circle around your answer, and put a square around the circle.
21. Punch three small holes in the top of this paper with your pencil point.
22. Underline all even numbers on the left side of this paper.
23. Now that you have finished reading everything carefully, do only sentences one and two!

Water! :) (calves drink milk).

That would be the answer of choice if you in stating your question had not demanded an answer beginning with 'm'
