When I was in the Military, I worked with the Military Justice System, the Judge Advocate General's Corps, and a friend of mine who was a JAG Officer once gave me a copy of a "death sentence" handed down by Judge Roy Bean upon a Mexican outlaw found guilty of murder. I want to share it, because it has always made me far more appreciative of our current Justice System.

I don't have the "link," sorry, but one can search and find it easily enough.

Read this death sentence by Judge Roy Bean of the 1800's. Is this harsh, or not harsh enough?

Jose Manuel Miguel Gonzales, in a few short weeks it will be spring. The snows of winter will flow away, the ice will vanish, the air will become soft and balmy. The annual miracle of the years will awaken and come to pass.
But you will not be there.

The rivulet will run its soaring course to the sea. The timid desert flowers will put forth their tender shoots. The glorious valleys in this imperial domain will blossom as the rose.
Still you will not be there.

From every treetop, some wildwood songster will carol his mating song. Butterflies will sport in the sunshine. The gentle breeze will tease the tassels of the wild grasses and all nature will be glad.
But you will not be there to enjoy it.

Because I command the sheriff of the county to lead you away to some remote spot, swing you by the neck from a knotting bough of some sturdy oak and let you hang until dead.

And then Jose Manuel Miguel Gonzales, I further command that such officer retire quickly from you

How would you like to have had this guy for your Judge?

To be honest, I don't know if this is an actual Historical photo of his place, or an Artists rendition......I do know the details (names and such) are accurate from reading about him.

The judge seems a bit too into his job.

I wonder how he could take it so personally.

Well, from what I heard, Roy Beans neck was kinda stiff from a not so succesful lynching where he was the guest of honor...
Apparently he both searched justice and justice searched him...not exactly a person whom you would adress "Your Honor" today...lol
