So, I was at urgent care a couple weeks ago and the doctor I saw started talking to me about Botox and was trying to persuade me into getting it done. I already know my views on it, but was curious what other people's thoughts on the subject.

What does urgent care have to do with botox? I really don't understand the connection. I mean, was there a problem that required botox?

What will the botox be used for?

Well, about all I feel comfortable saying is this: Be careful. Some folks have been happy with botox. Others not so happy, and in fact have had bad reaction to it. Or, the product used was not actually botox. So just do your homework.

Just can't figure why a doctor in urgent care would talk about botox.

Sorry Cmarieh, but I just don't understand.

It's okay, I didn't quite understand myself why he mentioned it. He did say that in some cases it helps with preventing migraines which I think is absurd and another thing is I am nowhere near the age to even consider tightening skin. I just meant it as a general question. Would you get botox? Why or why not

I think it is primarily used for cosmetic purposes.

Some folks have facial surgery to correct all kinds of things. Those surgeries range from being done for merely vain reasons to more sensible ones.

I wouldn'thave it to hide little things. You know, like age marks. On the other hand, if there was something dramatically different about my looks than what was normal, I would consider the idea of cosmetic surgery or botox.

Cmarieh, I scrolled up. You're only 24. Are you feeling some sort of pressure to change how you look? I hope not.

I would never have Botox to treat my wrinkles. I like my wrinkles and grey hairs they are part of me and my life.

Botox is used to treat a number of other conditions including excessive sweating where deodarants don't work, cervical dystonia, hypersensitive bladder, certain eye problems and chronic migraine.

Many drugs are developed for one particularly reason and are found to be affective in treating other things.

Botox was originally for muscle relaxing/pain relief before it ever became so popular as a cosmetic procedure

I'm indifferent to it

If it helps you with preventing migraines then I would use it without qualms. I get headaches often too, at times severe, but I don't believe that they are migraines.

Take a look at people like Michael Jackson, Janice Dickinson and Pamela Anderson.. THEN ask yourself if you want botox.. :/ I wouldn't do it because inevitably the doctors botch it, and then you look lopsided. You can't hide a bad botox job, particularly on the face.. This is Janice Dickinson:

Do ya REALLY want to end up looking like this? :/

I had to have Botox injections every 90 days for a condition I had, which Praise God He has evidently touched because it is an incurable neurological condition. My Medicaid spenddown was so high I could no longer have the injections. But they did work for me, and I know of other people who have had them for various conditions. Like migraines; the injections are done between the eyebrows in a lot of cases.

I don't see any harm in them as long as you do not have side effects. Some people literally would not be able to function and be on disability if they did not have the injections. There are many conditions they help and relieve.

I think it is ridiculous for cosmetic reasons, right up there with plastic surgery and liposuction.

Botox for pain relief or in the treatment of migraines isn't a cosmetic procedure. The intention is that it (basically) paralyzes the nerves that are contributing to severe migraine pain.

I don't think that they are offering you a cosmetic procedure, CMariah.

If I were being debilitated by severe migraine pain, I'd probably try it. I understand that the effects are relatively short-lived, and much easier on the system than other migraine related medication. That said? You are putting botulism toxin into your system, even if it is highly diluted or however they are safely dosing.

*I am not a medical professional, and all of the above is based on my memory and personal opinion.

Well, that's a LITTLE unfair. There are YEARS between those photos, and it's clear that Janice has had LOTS of fill work done. Botox immobilizes the muscles. Not that I've had work done nor would I push for a person to have cosmetic surgery.

CMariah is talking about a medical procedure to aid in pain relief.

Yes, i have a friend who has various pain issues and is constantly on pain meds. She gets botox injections in some areas as part of her pain management. I've heard of others that have mentioned it for pain relief as well.

I figured to give my take on botox, I am firmly against it as I don't want any injections like that in my body. I wanted a general consensus whether to use it for pain or to remove wrinkles or what not. Plus, for wrinkles and frown lines, God created us to get older and so I don't believe in any form of plastic surgery or injections including botox, although there are exceptions for medical purposes. My doctor offered another solution and I am currently debating whether to do it or not.

Please continue on this as it is very fascinating on how people feel about this topic and would love to hear more

How does someone have but one view on this? Botox has so many uses. It depends on what it's used for.

I found it helpful on my lower esophagus sphincter. (LES - the valve between the stomach and throat.) Because of it, I was able to get food into my stomach again. My LES was spasming so hard, the food just laid in the bottom of my esophagus for up to 5 minutes. (Granted, probably could have lost weight faster is I had to wait five minutes between bites, but food is yummy, and I'm not that patient. lol)

I hear it does wonderful things for people with other muscle spasms. The only things I have against it are it cost so much to have it done (even with insurance), it only works for a few months, and each time it's done it loses it's effectiveness.

I'm very thankful God resolved that one muscle spasm most the time. I still get it, but not often enough to need Botox. (And not often enough to lose weight quickly either. lol)

So, what's going on that an urgent care doctor wants you to use it, if you don't mind answering?

LOL Is that it? For migraines? Sure, I could see that helping if you have the migraine in the same place all the time. Why would you think it's absurd if you don't yet know how it works? Don't be so afraid to ask the doctor the obvious questions that come to mind. I'd gladly take Botox for migraines if a doctor could persuade me it works for my kind of migraine.

How about stop assuming that's Botox making those changes. Botox isn't cosmetic surgery. Matter of fact, cosmetically speaking, its not even surgery.

If it will help you, then go for it, CM.

Although, l'm confused as to how jamming needles into someones face or above their eyeball sockets can "help with headaches "?

I think you answer it yourself best here where you say you are no where near the age to even consider it Lady Marieh.

That would be my thought on it as well if it were suggested to me to get botox.

Also fun little fact is botox is botulism. Lol, stuff like this always makes me wonder; who was that first person who thought "hey, let's just inject food poisoning into our face"?
