It's a points-based popularity reference. When someone reps you you get rep points equal to their rep power. For example I have a rep power of 14, so if I rep you you get 14 points. You get rep power based upon your point total and number of posts.

It's a convoluted system that again, really only amounts to a popularity contest.

The idea is good and the genuine remarks are great, but like life --pretension creeps in to allow favoritism to make the point of it useless, nay, even mis-guiding. it is the little star symbol on the left lower part of each post input along with the ! which is to report misuse, and the blog this , which you don't want to hit unless they know about it smile.
