Hi guys,
I'm just starting a thread for all business owners to share about experiences, fears, failures and successes, concerns and tips and tricks about owning a business. Mainly to encourage, edify, exhort and share one others burdens as best we can!

I for one have been wanting to start a home business for some time now, slowly getting there with a young family of two and working full time. Also working through fears and the how's. That's my experience so far hehehe..looking forward to hearing from others!

Go for it.
Life is short.

Online businesses are the future...the days of brick and mortar stores are numbered.
Don't worry about the failure part, it will only consume you.

Owning any business is hard, and takes a toll on you....if you let it.
So, dont ever let it.
His will be done, and if its meant to be it will happen.

Im telling you, thats about all you can do.
If you don't enjoy it after a year, than it isnt worth it.

But if you are interested, l can share a million online business tips.

For a small fee.
Kidding.

Thanks for the exhortation mate, I really appreciate it. Its been in me for a long time to start a business, initially it was a computer store but now im moving into freelance web design, I have one on going client and one I did for free to gain experience and portfolio. But I also want to include computer maintenance and repair as part of the business. I've been taking small steps and getting there! I'll take any advice you got, feed me! Lol

I echo that. Go for it.

My wife and I quit very good jobs to become, basically, "Carnies." We loved it and made about $1/4 M per year for 12 years.

What kind of business, bud? :D

I work full time and traffic in computer, computer peripherals, tablet, and phone maintenance and repairs on the side. My business: Easy PC - Repairs Made Simple. I'm hoping to drop the full time job around March next year and pursue my side business full time. I intend on expanding my repertoire a little more to include more involved network setup and maintenance, as well as more technical hardware repairs (such as soldering on printed circuit boards), too.

My experience in running my own business is fairly limited. All I can say for now is to hope to succeed yet prepare to fail; the latter isn't a pessimistic attitude, but advising to err on the side of caution. If my business fails, I have savings to fall back on and can pick up another job or go back to school. A safety net is probably all the better to have for someone with a family.

Uh........ That is kind of (very) "light" for many Carnies (owners, that is) I know a few who make 8 to 10 M a year.

Hey mate, that sounds great. Where do you work at the moment?
Me I'm freelancing web development/design and also want to get into computer maintenance and repair. I'd also like to get into computer consultancy in the future, like advising businesses on what they need/require etc...thanks for posting. I pray you all the success on your business, if you have questions or concerns be sure to post them here mate!

Thanks! Currently I work for a computer reseller that customizes laptops. I'm their primary technical support person.

Web development is pretty lucrative, isn't it? I have a friend that designs web pages as his side gig, and even small jobs seem to pay fairly well (but not sure how much time is invested into development). Hoping for all the best with your goals, too!

Hmm, questions... How does itemizing and writing things off work? The whole tax(es) thing in business ownership seems a little daunting. I've heard you can write off your residence if you practice your business out of your home also, but am clueless as to what the process is for that.

You can get home office deductions but there are specific rules for you to qualify.
With running your own business, I would strongly recommend working with a planner or CPA for those type of tax questions

Your job sounds like fun, I've had short stints in computer shops years ago, nothing that really stuck though.
Yeah there is some good money in web development, pending on your skills. Its a competitive market (what market isn't) but I believe once I get the ball rolling more, more work will come my way.

So in the public holiday coming up next week a few of my mates and myself are going to get together to talk about business and finance. Talk about our goals, learn from each other, share burdens, pray for each other etc. I can't wait, I want to push for it to be a regular thing between us!

Hello brethren! I have been analyzing business transactions (for diverse businesses) for decades now, as finance matters is the part that I am responsible for decision making stuff of owners. If you want to succeed in business, then you must have sound internal controls & financial reporting system (e.g. designing forms, keeping your books tidy/neat for monitoring results of operation/financial condition, for government compliance too). If you have any query about finance matters, I would be glad to answer them the best I can (with my 20+ years vast business experience). Regards & God bless!

I think it's great that you have this desire and I very much admire anyone who chooses to start up a business. It is hard work and a dedication that not very many people have. With God you can do all things even if it seems overwhelming at times, but he is our comforter through it all.

I am in my last year of school with a major in accounting and this may seem like obvious advice, but make sure that you keep your personal and business finances separate. A lot of people just open another account at the same bank, but a word of wisdom make sure it is completely two different banking institutions so when you open your mail you know exactly whether it's personal or for your business especially if you work from home. I will pray that God leads you in what is in the best interest for you and your family.

Hi cmarieh, thanks for your encouragement. I am wanting to keep finances seperate! I've been looking how to do it so the money that is earnt is not mine but the business'. I don't want to draw a wage from it for a while yet. I am seeing an accountant today about this and so far, I think the way to go is to register a company and have business units under it as I want to do more than one business eventually but I will have this clarified further today.
I'm reading a book called Rich Dad, Poor Dad at the moment, totally eye-opening. :)
