This is considered to be one of the greatest sermons preached in America. I think the preacher is one of the best.... but I happen to think this particular sermon is totally horrible in its intent.

Anyway, it's very famous, and though I have read it several times, this is the first video I have ever seen of it. From what I understand, Edwards (the original preacher) probably delivered it just about like this guy.

Oh right. Didn't Oprah make a movie, called that. So is that supposed to be funny, it seems to long to watch with a guy and a white wig on.

No, it's not humorous, at all. This was the sermon that is credited with beginning "The Great Awakening" back almost 300 years ago. (And all men officiating in public wore white wigs in those days.)

Absolutely. The accounts published about the responses of the congregation are almost unbelievable. It is said that people were screaming and crying... even holding onto the pillars of the church to keep from falling through the floor, into Hell.

I believe there were 12 suicides attributed to this awful sermon, and one of them was the preacher's own nephew or cousin, as I recall.

He really was a great preacher, and in other works, honestly said some good things. But this particular sermon was horrible. Even Edwards, himself, about six years later, admitted that this was NOT the way to preach. That it was ineffective in true conversions.
