Last week someone asked about book suggestions, and another poster mentioned Mere Christianity.

I hadn't read the book in years. So, I went to my bookshelf, and located it. I had forgotten what a truly fantastic little book that was!

If there is any one, single book that I think all people should read, it is that one. It's short and simple, BUT it will be a difficult read for some of the posters here because it DOES require that you think while reading it. And, frankly, I believe that is beyond the capability of some of us.

Of course, I am not talking about YOU, dear Reader. I am talking about that other guy or gal... and you know who I mean because you feel the same way. LOL

How many people here have read Mere Christianity?

I have not read it. I will check if it comes on audio to listen on the long commutes. Thanks!

i read it years ago. i should read it again.

i'm not even gonna lie. it was a difficult read for me. idk how it long it took me to finish the book lol.

I have not - not yet, at least. I enjoyed The Screwtape Letters, though, and I liked Lewis' appearance and how he was portrayed in A Severe Mercy. Maybe I'll grab a copy from Amazon soon.

Seriously, I think you will get three times as much out of reading the book as you ever will out of just listening to it. It's not really the kind of presentation that lends itself to a recorded message.

Then I think you did it the right way. The manner in which Lewis writes is geared for slower reading.

My wife taught Speed Reading, and I took her classes. But, despite knocking out some pretty fast times... I found I had to slow way down to get any of the really good stuff out of this book.

...and I have five unread books in my bookshelf that aren't even on the list

I need a new bookcase

I'm with you there. I have a good many of books I still need to read...eventually :p

i found myself having to reread sections to fully understand.

Sometimes I do that three or four times. I don't own a book I have read less than twice. And, I have never read a book in my life that I didn't reread some parts to more solidly anchor them in my mind.

Yep great book, although as a source for apologetics in this day and age some parts of it are a little outdated. That's not to take anything away from it though. I revert back to the "Jesus was either insane, a liar, or who he said he was" argument very often. :)

Thanks for the reminder... I've heard about it, and always intended to read it, but seem to get sidetracked. It's now top of my "next" list.

The first 17 pages of The Problem with Pain soured me on trusting Lewis for Biblical views. Sorry. Hubby likes his writings. I don't.

We do too. Unfortunately we only have room for the seven bookcases we have. lol

I'm not sure listening to it will do you good, unless they've made the rewind button more efficient in the last 20 years.

I don't think I read Mere Christianity straight through, but I do remember loving it. The 5 Loves was another fantastic book he wrote. Deep, brilliant stuff.
