Posting a reply in Bible Discussion on whether or not medications are sinful, I posted some of the little I know about Biblical meds, three topical meds in particular, wine, salt and olive oil

Off hand I know that olive oil is good for helping wounds to heal. I have used it also for rashes.
Another very wonderful use is for ridding your dog of ear ticks, a few drops in each ear will suffocate them, and a few days later repeated just in case.

Does anyone here know more uses for olive oil, wine, salt or any other mention from the Word. I love natural remedies, that work because they are a gift from our Dad............hoping to hear from you.......j

I have heard of honey used as an antiseptic, but have not used
it myself.

Silver is also suppose to speed up healing, in fact it is possible to
buy plasters (I think you call them band aid) with a silver coating.

I heard that myrrh (one of the gifts the wise men brought to Jesus's birth) has a lot of medicinal uses.

I was searching on salt and found 2 Kings 2.20. And here is the context. This counts?

2 Kings 2:20 Context

18And when they came again to him, (for he tarried at Jericho,) he said unto them, Did I not say unto you, Go not? 19And the men of the city said unto Elisha, Behold, I pray thee, the situation of this city [is] pleasant, as my lord seeth: but the water [is] naught, and the ground barren. 20And he said, Bring me a new cruse, and put salt therein. And they brought [it] to him. 21And he went forth unto the spring of the waters, and cast the salt in there, and said, Thus saith the LORD, I have healed these waters; there shall not be from thence any more death or barren [land]. 22So the waters were healed unto this day, according to the saying of Elisha which he spake.

Gracious and salty speech is also healthy.. so this verse says.

[h=1]Colossians 4:6[/h]
“Let your speech be alway with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man.”

Mar, you have gone off the OP with foods, but I love your post, so I will join YOU.

I learned to make bread from the Word. Not from any specific passage but from it all.

Flour from wheat..............the Harvest.
Olive oil..................... The Holy Spirit
Salt......................... We are the Salt of the earth
Water..........................Jesus is and gives us the Water of Life.

That in the right roportions gives us unleavened bread. If we want it to rise to regular bread we can add yeast......cool......been making both for decades.

I was reading about wine while reading a book about the Phonecian wars:

Wine is antisepctic, and apparently, if I remember correctly, it's not as much about alcohol content as the level of acidity.
One would pour wine on wounds (as the bible also says), to clean them. Maybe even soak cloth in oil and wrap it around the wound.

Frankincense is a good oil for example but you need the real essential oils and not the cheap and nasty stuff. As with everything in nature, we loose nutritional value if it gets exposed to light, oxigen and heat so when we process natural medicine it is of utmost important to try and keep as much of the original values and try not to loose anything to oxidative processes..

Yes i did, sorry. The thread's so interesting, and so was the site! I meant to cut off soewhere after Grains, but did not want to miss the grape juice , olive oil and vinegar at the bottom so just posted them all in. As i said, it could be a starting point for Biblical meds with a quick reference too--but now i see the list too long and how does one erase!! I haven't dug deeper into Barley, for one, but nowadays the young barley grass is being used as a great healing food. There was a book i came across in college telling about how wheat was proably used by the Essenes..but no details now.

I've heard about people doing this instead of using toothpaste. It's said to really help with cavities too

I'm not really into healthy living, but I grow herbs. (Boy! That meant something entirely different when I was young. lol) My original excuse was so hubby can cook with them, but most of my herbs aren't used in cooking. I just like the smells and textures. (Lavender is supposed to be a good antibacterial, and chamomile tea is supposed to calm and relax, but it tastes too good to worry about drinking it for medicinal purposes anyway.) But to make myself feel better about "wasting space" in our garden, I've also gotten into studying the medical benefits, even if I may never use the knowledge. And since I'm also studying the Bible, I sometimes go off on a tangent to see what the herbs they used were for. I'm only in Numbers, so don't expect any later-herbs. (Haven't gotten to hyssop yet, for instance. lol)

But here are frankincense and myrrh -- two used for the tabernacle.

The wound doctor actually used honey on hubby's bedsore. I had to ask the nurse if that's all it was after she left. He said the main ingredient was honey, but it did have other medications in it. It really was used to avoid infection.

(And, yup. You were right, we do call plasters band-aids over here. I got confused the first time I saw "plaster" in a British woman's novel. Here "plaster" is what a cast for a broken arm or leg is made out of.)

Ok, we will just wait for more. Pondering on thse biblical medications, i unearthed some photocopied pp of a book that interested me almost 20 yr ago on biblical plants. and on searching found another, Duke's Handbook c. 2008, part of which is easily accessible online. Its a Catalog of 'Faith-based' Farmaceuticals.

Indeed it's some pretty good stuff, people injest the oil for internal health also, it's good for the skin too.
The product has numerous healing applications :)

I have a thyroid going bad Arrrg, I've been using iodized salt which has iodine in it.
Fish and other seafoods which contain iodine and omega 3 fatty acids, it's good to have seafood in the diet no doubt a lot of people don't eat enough of it. I've never ate much seafood in my life very little probably why my thyroid struggles these days :(
the japanese eat tons of seafood and the country has very low thyroid issues in its population not like here in the U.S were there's 70 million with thyroid issues. Thyroid medication ive read is the 4th most prescribed med.
though to much fish especially tuna fish can be unhealthy also, for it has high levels of mercury in it.
