Utter despair is the belief that life originated out of nothing, means nothing, and proceeds nowhere. And there is no point.
The way to get out of despair is three-fold:
1) Gather hope from people who have done it before you. Listen to, read stories of survivors, people who have made it through suffering and strife.
2) Decide this is as bad as I want it to get: Become willing to try something else
3) Get honest. God will come to those who seek Him. Tell Him what’s going on, ask Him for help, give it up to Him.

Or breaking a string on a floyd rose equipped guitar in the middle of a song.
Especially if it swipes you. Ouch!

Utter despair's only solution is to be more involved intimately with Jesus - praying and then listening to the thoughts he gives you. Ask to be filled with His Spirit more fully. A spirit filled person does not despair. He is FILLED WITH God himself.

No one likes to hear this, but the admonition to "give thanks for all things" really does work when you do it verbally in prayer. Even though you don't feel like giving thanks because that is a human soul (emotional) response, give it anyway from your spirit. That is putting your faith in "all things working for good". And showing your faith in God's goodness and care for what he knows you need to go through for your spiritual growth.

You will never despair when you have surrendered your life into his keeping. He will lead you through all things and have you come out even stronger - when you accept the condition/situation and trust him.

When you despair, you want to control things. When you surrender your life to God, you learn to go with the flow with complete faith in the goodness of God.
