About 10 pm there was a massive loud boom and all the windows in the house
shook. (I've just been to check them all in case any have broken).

I went outside after the first boom, then there were two more, so loud my ear drums
were ringing.

The most plausible explanation is the super sonic boom of aircraft flying over. It was
dark but I could hear the sound of aircraft and could just make out the chem trail.

Never heard anything so loud before ever! All the neighbours were out as well wondering
what it was.

We are some miles from the nearest RAF air base but I don't suppose at that
speed it would take more than a few minutes to reach where I live.

Has anyone ever heard of this before, it nearly put the windows through.

As far as I am aware the aircraft are not suppose to reach speeds which break the
sound barrier while flying over residential areas. Someone is going to be in trouble
when they get back to base tonight.

Happens sometimes here too, even though they aren't supposed to break the sound barrier over populated areas. First time it happened I thought a bomb had gone off nearby. It usually makes the evening news and I imagine some hotshot gets a severe reprimand....at least I hope so.

Since the jets are that fast and the sound takes longer, I don't think you have time to see the jets even if you are outside then. I remember the trails, but I'm also remembering relatively-common sound-barrier BOOMs from back when I was younger than 9, so no guarantees how good my memory is.

I did google though, and the last explosion in England that made international news was that 10 people killed bus explosion.

That is probably when the London Underground was targeted, the bus was another incident
the same day. :(

I did wonder for a moment if another car had crashed into the side of the house
like last year. But while that was really loud, it was nowhere like the sonic boom.

Just heard it on the radio this morning, a French
civilian aircraft flying in British skies was unresponsive so
two typhoon fighter jets were sent to investigate.

Apparently their radio failed, so the jets escorted it to an airport.

Hope that doesn't happen too often, I don't think the windows will take it.

I wonder how they communicate when the radios fail.

I cannot help but imagine a lot of hand gestures and strict faces or cardboard and pens :p
