Two friends were coming home from school, excited about their easter hols they were chatting away about what they were going to do. One of them however, seemed confused and had more questions than she had answers.
Sally : I am so looking forward to our easter hols, a well deserved break I'd say, after all that hard work.
Kim : yeah, so am I, its almost a week off, even before good friday.
Sally : I am happy about the holidays, but now that you've mentioned it Kim, I can't really figure out why they call it 'good' friday. I know that was the day that Jesus died on the cross, but if He was a good person who loved people, healed them and raised them from the dead, what's so good about Him dying such a painful death.
Kim : I had that question too, until mom explained it to me. She said that Jesus gave his life as a payment for our sins. He paid a debt which we could never pay on our own, like a mortgage bill far beyond what our parents can afford! We are the reason he died, taking all of our sin upon himself and He could do that because he himself was without any sin, the perfect sacrifice.
Sally :I know Jesus was the Son of God, born of the Holy Spirit, but why would God send his son to die for me?
Kim : Because of his love, Sally. There wasn't anything good for him in his dying because the burden of our sin was on him. But when he took away our sin, we became perfect in God's sight, adopted as His children, able to hear and be led by a loving heavenly Father, only because we believe. That is indeed good news for us. The blessings of God are available to us only because of the cross and that is what makes good friday good.
Sally: I never thought of it that way Kim. I used to go about the day feeling sorry that Jesus had to die such a shameful death, but now I feel more grateful for what he has done just for me, thanks for sharing.
This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testings we do, yet he did not sin. So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most. Hebrews 4:15,16 (NLT).
