I have been told to pray to be filled with the Holy Spirit
and pray to receive the gift of tongues. I want to be baptized by the Holy Spirit. It's a gift we are freely given if we but ask. Am I right in thinking this?

What purpose do you envision in you being able to speak in tongues? Why do you want it?

It is used to edify your spirit. It's a prayer language to help with spiritual growth. I believe I need it. I have been told many things about the gift of tongues. The other tongues that aswas used in preaching that the crowds could hear in their native tongue is not the one I'm after the one used for prayer is the one I am seeking at this time.

You don't think and speak in English? I'm not certain, but I think God understands that a little bit.

Yes, the gift of tongues as a prayer language is a valuable thing. Just pray for God to reveal it to you. Yet, do not despair if it takes time. You can always pray to God regardless and you are filled with Holy Spirit upon salvation, even if you do not speak in tongues immediately. Do not stress out. I attended a church for years where I was stressed because I hadn't spoken in tongues yet, but I eventually received the gift of tongues. Understand, also, that there are many Christians that do not believe in the gift of tongues or prophecy or healing or things that Holy Spirit does in the New Testament, so know that you'll probably see some posts on here later that challenge your belief and maybe even mock you or condemn you. Don't let that get to you, okay? Just trust in the Lord, read His word, and continue building your relationship with Him. Everything comes in God's timing. :)

If scripture says it I believe it. If man says it I question it. Garbage in garbage out. That's my thoughts on life in general. If it doesn't come from the Father take it with a grain of salt.

Tongues is a spiritual gift and the Bible doesn't say everyone gets it but some churches do.

I trust the Bible. You can have the Holy Spirit without speaking in tongues. I don't know a verse that shows all people who have the Holy Spirit spoke in tongues....

Yes the apostles in acts, but we have many that day we are parts of a whole and each given unique gifts.

RDB,
Seriously, what would you do if you started babbling something tonight? What would be the effect on people you come in contact with daily because of you starting to do that?

Tongues is not for show. God is not chaotic. He has a purpose for all things. So, there are tongues used for prayer when you can't express the words...essentially, it is your soul crying out to God in the Heavenly Language. Then, there is tongues for the edification of the body. Those are the ones that are heard and followed by an interpretation. It isn't "uncontrollable". You don't sit at your desk and start spewing another language without thought or control.

ref. 1 Corinthians 12:8-11, 28-30
1 Corinthians 14

I know. I first began speaking in tongues when you were about three years old. I am trying to determine why RDB feels he has to have something he had probably never even heard much about before a couple of months ago.

True, Ariel82. There can be great pressure to speak in tongues, yet not speaking in tongues does not determine one's salvation and worth, as you know, because you mentioned it above in a post. Tongues does not prove filling of Holy Spirit or salvation or even how closely one walks with God. :) That's why I mentioned that one shouldn't stress out about it. We should just seek to know and be known and trust in the Lord's timing.

Okay, Willie-T. :) Wasn't sure what was going on there.

If you will read all his posts, it seems someone has hyped him up to believe that becoming a Christian is to get goose bumps from your nose to your toes, feel weird spasms, and in general, start living in a world of Hee Bee Gee Bees and Woo Woos.

In college there was a church that had closed meetings unless you proved to be a born again believer and spoke in tongues....I avoided that group cuz my red flag alarm went off.

Demonically possessed people speak in tongues too..

I am not against speaking in tongue. I am against telling God's children they have to prove their adoption by speaking in tongues that was gibberish and had not interpreter and was chaos with everyone "speaking" as one.

They were bullying a friend to go to the meeting and told me I couldn't go unless I spoke in tongues. She said she was feeling sick and didn't want to go. They guilted her into going and " prayed healing" over her.

Spiritual Gifts Test

Just took it...wonder what everyone else gifts are
Leadership, Teaching, Edification...I took a similar test long ago. :) But, I think I miss the "edification" part on this site sometimes. :) Get a little too caught up in the teaching and leading part.
