A couple days ago, a football team and their cheerleaders came in from Memphis. Probably around 50 people or so. So as I'm on my way out the door one of my co-workers looks at me and says.."look at that sh**"... I said yeah a football team... then he says "buncha ****in ni**ers"... I wanted to punch him in the face but rather than lose my job I just walked away. I came back to work the next day and reported this to management. I felt like it was the right thing to do because that was completely unacceptable workplace Behavior. Also I have numerous black co-workers see if I hold in high regard and I feel like they should know what he really is.... it's pretty disappointing when someone you thought was cool turns out to be a big jerk

I don't condone racism in the slightest but I disagree with telling other co-workers what he said. Yes the management should know but telling other co-workers he is racist will only bring more anger and an unhealthy work environment for everyone. What that co-worker is, is a lost soul who needs prayer and possibly someone to share the gospel with :)

I agree that is unacceptable but I would not have reported it to management - I don't know why, I just know I wouldn't have. I might have said to the guy "that's a bit racist isn't it?" and took it from there but management...no.

I'm a bit with MPW. I am one who prefers to confront things right up front. And I often encourage out-loud discussion, often to the embarrassment of those around me. But, that's just who I am old enough to finally let myself be. I want to know the "Whys" behind statements and feelings.

This is true; usually there is always a story behind any type of bitterness. For example, my grandmother pretty much hated black men and for years I really didn't know why. Well right before she died she told me she had been raped by one and she just never forgave him and this bitterness progressed to hating all black men. Great point Willie.

It's funny how times change too because back in my younger teenage years it was pretty shocking for a white woman to date a black guy. Now when I see a mixed-race couple I smile because I see God at work in bringing different races together in love. Funny how you don't see muslims integrate in the way afro-carribean's do.

Much of our prejudices come from the opinions of others. Usually people, or even organizations we respect, or think are legitimately authoritative. It is a sad situation to let ourselves be in, and a rare thing when we internally challenge it.

Abraham Lincoln once said, "I don't think I like that man over there; I believe I will go over and get to know him."

How different a world we could make for ourselves if we could only remember (and practice) that simple sentiment.

These co-workers and I have worked together for years and we have established a bond. So we're always going to have each other's backs. So when some new guy comes in and tries to stir the pot then there will consequences... he needed to be exposed because they need to know that he can't be trusted

Or, because of you handling it differently, he COULD become one of your most trusted friends once you both knew you were dealing honestly with one another.

Maybe God put you in that position for a reason. Maybe instead of doing what you did you should have talked to him and shared the gospel?

Well, from what you have told us, you didn't say anything to him, directly, but went behind his back to both the management and to your friends to talk about him. This kind of makes you a bit untrustworthy, doesn't it?

And, I am assuming some of your co-workers are Black? What if you could be a fly on the wall, and hear them when they were around only other Blacks, and let fly with a similar remark about White people. It happens, ya know. Where would your trust in them suddenly disappear to?

No, I think you missed a golden opportunity to begin some healing dialog right there. Not saying it would immediately change his thinking, but you two would at least be both dealing honestly with one another.

Management probably can't do anything unless he mistreated a customer or something.

True honesty is a very difficult and uncomfortable subject for most of us.

I try to avoid people like the person that you described. Guy sounds like he's really ignorant. He obviously thought that he was superior to those that he thought inferior. Probably a coward too.

90 percent of the work population has attitudes and problems controlling their mouths and behaviors. I have worked in places where this happen all the time. some work place are like a day time soap opera. I unless someone is threatening me or my job just try to mind my own business. More then likely you can cry to who ever you want until the cows come home and a few things will happen 1 nothing 2 said person get his butt yelled and and or possibly fired 3 retaliation for said person getting his butt yelled at 4 most of the people you complain to will turn around and stab you in the back anyways so whats the point 5 does telling all the other coworkers make you any better then your co worker being disrespectful? I would just sit back and watch the drama unfold and unless it was a personal attack on me or my job let karma take care of it.
p.s person with a listening ear also has a talking mouth

That N word makes me nuts. It makes whoever says it look unintelligent, stupid and uneducated. I would NEVER call anyone the N word, regardless of what color they are. IMO, racists should be rounded up and boiled in oil.. lol jk
