Three of us are planning to put on a fundraising concert next year at our church. We are planning to perform five or six contemporary Christian songs I’ve written. We’ll likely do five or six of Linda Young’s songs, and Cindy Sabatini will pick out five or six she’d like to do.

Thought I’d make a video of me rehearsing five of my songs. It’s hard to get a balance between vocal and guitar, when I record with my camera. I played the guitar as quiet as I could (I thought).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dcwvy1OeMXc

Any suggestions about these five songs?

Hey Resurrection33,

I don't want to hurt your feelings, and I say this with the best possible intentions, but, man, this is not good.

But let me start with the positive side: I really like your lyrics. They are God-honoring and they also have a clever and witty rhyming scheme. The text is thoroughly enjoyable.

But there are some definite problems. Let me give you a few things off the top of my head:

1. You need to take some voice lessons. You are very often not in tune -- due primarily to poor breath support. You need to work with a professional to help address that primary issue. The actual tone of your voice is quite good, but it's so often out of tune that it's not easy to listen to.

2. Your guitar is also out of tune. That's an easy one to fix, but please take care to tune well.

3. The melodies of your songs are rather simplistic. There is a lot of step-wise motion, but real interest in a melody comes with interval jumps. There is also quite a bit of monotone melody -- melody that hovers around one pitch. Again, not very interesting or engaging.

Please take this with the good intent it was written. I want to be constructive, and I certainly don't mean to hurt you. Scripture calls us to "play skillfully." (Psalm 33:3) I really think you need to work with a professional instructor, especially for your singing voice. I wish I lived near you -- I'd give you a few free lessons myself because, like I said, the core instrument is good, it just needs some attention.

It's a little hard to make a quality recording in your living room. Add some amplification, mixing, equalization, two more instrumentalists, and three-part harmony, and I think you'd have a better product.

Here is a studio version of a couple of those songs. Again, I am the only artist, so there is no harmony and just the acoustic guitar, but it's a start.

Again, I'm trying to be constructively critical here. The problems I heard have nothing to do with production values. The intonation issues in your singing are still present in the studio recorded works. And the melodies are, in my opinion, just a bit uninteresting.

Again, I would encourage you to work with a professional voice instructor. It sounds to me that a lot of the problems can be fixed pretty easily.

I don't think I'm cut out for the opera.

There are professional voice instructors who teach "pop" technique -- I'm one of them. I teach pop, rock, R&B, musical theater and jazz in addition to classical technique. A singer needs good technique and good breath support no matter what style one is singing.

Yes, our choir director, who is also our church music director, who is also one of the two ladies I'll be performing with, never lets us breathe. I'm still learning.

Perhaps I'm exaggerating a little.

In other words, no breathing in the middle of a phrase. Phrases can be very long, though. So you have to learn to take deep breaths when you have the opportunity and sneak breaths when you run out of air. I am frequently the only tenor in the choir - when I sneak a breath, it is rather conspicuous, I would think.

Breath support isn't all about singing long phrases. It also entails managing your breath. And this is the problem I hear in your singing. It seems to me that the air is not being used effectively -- with sufficient air pressure and focus. With that said, it's really hard to give you some tips on how to manage your breath better by simply hearing these recordings. If you can try to visualize your breath being channeled though a straw as you sing, that might help a lot. But, again, without being in the room with you while you're singing, it's hard to say.

Remember, it's all well and good to take deep breaths, but we sing while we're EXHALING -- that's the most important part of breath support/control in singing. And you wouldn't have to take as many breaths if you manage the exhalation better.

I hope you're not referring to the video. In the video I'm just screaming at the top of my lungs, trying to be heard above the guitar.
