I hear sometimes from people that when a woman is single God should be her husband. This bothers me and I'm a little afraid of the reactions I may get once I post this. It bothers me because men don't view God as their wife. As far as I know when men are feeling lonely they don't get told that God is their wife. Also people have sex with people. Maybe view God as a father figure but not a husband.

I think that the idea is ludicrous. You are right in saying that single lonely men don't consider God as their wife, at least nobody I have ever spoke to has said this. I consider the Heavenly Father as a father figure but consider my dad as my actual father. Single adults are free from the responsibility of a spouse so they are able to focus more sharply on doing the work of God whatever that may be.

You provide an excellent point of view. It was most refreshing. Glad to have you join us. Welcome to CC.

Yeah Jesus said to refer to God as "Father." The bride and groom thing is only metaphorical and isn't talking about specific individuals married to God. And the solution to Adam's loneliness was creating Eve not God becoming Eve.

People who say to single people God is your husband, are just repeating
parrot fashion what they have heard without thinking it through.

Im single God is not my husband, He is my Father and Friend but not my Husband.
I think some of it may came from the Catholic notion and nuns who do treat God as
a husband when they take vows of chastity.

If God was going to be a husband to us, there would have been no need to create
a companion for Adam and for God to institute marriage.

God should always come first, even after we marry. We should not just keep Him in mind until we become married, and then quickly forget Him : p I love the Lord first, and then those that I am closest to in this life.

I take it that we are to look at God as being in a husband's role of provider, companion, a covenant relationship much like marriage, etc. I also see the intimacy inherent in that word "husband".

I can see why a man would have to bend his mind a little to feel comfortable with that particular word. But all the things that a husband stands for would also be applicable to him.

The word isn't native to the English language it was borrowed from old English from old Norse.

basically in times of old Norse "hus" meant master of a house, "bondi" meant a man who has land and stock.

today it's viewed as intimacy between a man and a woman, though this wasn't always the case in times ago.

It does make more sense in this setting

PS
Hmm, we sure have messed up "hus" then, now it just means house :p
bondi is almost the same as it was, but now it's spelled bonde.

I agree what a mess, English translations of older words rarely mean as they use too, the why I'll never know lol...

A bible verse

John 15:1 KJV
I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman.

the parable about the vineyard is a good read.

It is easy for me to think of G-d as my husband as a woman. Isiah 54:5 For your Maker is your husband-- the LORD Almighty is his name-- the Holy One of Israel is your Redeemer; he is called the God of all the earth.

He is my provider, my protector, my best friend, my confidant, the one my soul loves, He completes me. But I like this thread because I have always wondered what it was like for a man. It does have to be odd to think of G-d in that way.

But I don’t think it’s a literal “husband” the Scripture is speaking of but that closeness and dependence that tow people have when they are in love.
