Thou shalt not murder..... smoking and drinking - (in excess causing liver problems and can't live without a liver) - same as murdering yourself albeit a slow process. Our bodies are the temple of God.... I am sure He would prefer smoke free clear mind and correct weight. I am as guilty as the smokers being over weight. I include myself in this mess of sin.
Then there is the other one of Thou shalt not have any idols or any graven images... in other words put something anything before the Lord and if we and I say we..... If we say we can't quit whatever our problem is are we then saying that the problem is stronger than the Lord? An idol possibly?

Hey guys what are your thoughts on lying? Would you consider it a sin to tell a white lie? What I mean by that is to tell a lie in order to protect the other person. I would appreciate thoughts on this.

God considers it a sin, its a commandment. if a situation seems like a lie will help, tell the truth and trust God to work it out, He will always and forever Honor those who honor His word. ( im not saying he will condemn someone to hell for a lie, im sure all of us have at some point lied, but we learn aboutthe truth and repent of the lie. when we know, we become accountable.

About the smoking and drinking.... that's fine if you want to "see" it that way... by all means, follow your conscience.
But to try to bind that on other believers is simply wrong... it is not in scripture.

Being overweight in and of itself is not a sin.... gluttony is a sin.

If you are simply overweight (like me ) because of a sedentary lifestyle, that's not a sin... that's just bad decisions about your overall well-being.

Some use catma instead
You might remember the Pharisees were all about rules and regulations. Jesus taught us that that doesn't work. We need to obey his commandments, but adding our own commandments just causes trouble.

I think the main problem is in all of this is that people don't want to see sin for what it really is... SIN... The truth is we all go against Gods principals and rules of His government whether it is lying, or any other of the laws we have been commanded not to do.

I have told many fibs at Christmas time to hide the fact that a good guesser just guessed what they got...or of omission... it does not make it right.

Anything we put before God is considered an idol and it doesn't have to be a graven image. Our husband or wife, kids, sports, TV, Computer, eating, smoking, drinking anything that becomes a full focus of our lives is putting something before God.

I have done my share of all the compromising and trying to rationalize that a wrong could be a right... But the TRUTH IS SIN IS SIN and if God said Thou Shalt Not then we should trust Him and obey.

No we can't earn our way to heaven but we were given the instructions to know how to love God and love our fellow men....It is God's law of love and lying is one of those laws so No there is never a right time to lie.

Hey Leave the valves out of it and drop the pride for some folks are born with a bad valve, practice at being quick to think slow to speak on such matters...
Hubby has a valve from a pig. It's a great valve, especially after comparing it to his last one. lol

I say I can't quit because I can't quit. I'm waiting for the green light from God. He's gonna have to do it for me, because I can't.

I'm pretty sure it's not an idol any more than I can't sing is an idol. If I can, I'll do; if I can't, I have no choice but to wait. Driving myself nuts(ier) trying didn't make it any better.

Amazing Grace I know you take care of your Aunt I'm assuming that maybe there's something going on with her and your trying to protect her. My Grandmother about a year before she passed had dementia and congestive heart failure. Her mind was a roller coaster. It was bad she had a good day now and then. She'd ask how everyone was for the most part we were good. My Brother has always suffered from bouts of depression. It is bad sometimes, well we kind of are used to it, it worries me and I hate it but I gave it to God and I'm here when he needs me. Anyhow my brother was always someone my Grandmother worried about. Even though he wasn't great I would say to her, he's fine Grandma, at the time he was staying with me and my family because he just moved back from another state and he needed a place to stay until he found an apartment and I wanted him to save some money and he was and he did. Anyhow he's moody and with two young kid's and a Husband who worked all the time I was exhausted and his pissy moody moods were ticking me off and worrying me. Now if it had been five years prior and my grandmas mind was still okay I would have told her and asked for her advice. But she was frail her mind was sick and her body was falling apart, I wasn't about to dump all of this on this woman. So when she asked how he was, I'd say he's good. I was lying but seriously why would I tell her the truth at this point. She couldn't process it and it would have made her mind worse. So did I lie? Yes I did, I don't like lying but I asked God to forgive me and I know he doesn't like lying but I hope he understood. my

Do what you have to do to protect your Aunt sweetheart. I get it, God bless you and her.
