I've heard arguments from both sides, but I want to hear your opinion on this. Is it sinful to get tattoos? I plan to get 3, maybe 4, tattoos to cover self harm scars. All of them will have meaning, and all will say something about my testimony that I can use to help others. Some people I know say it's sinful, and others say it's not as long as the tattoos aren't pagan tattoos. Thoughts?

All tattoos are pagan but that does not make them sinful.

How are all tattoos pagan?
People used to put marks / cuttings on their bodies for the deceased. Though the reasoning to get a tattoo may have good tensions it still has pagan origins

That makes sense.

It is until your parents say it's okay or until you live on your own and pay for them. lol

Lol, that's true. My dad is okay with: My mom isn't. So I'll likely wait until I'm moved out.

Honestly, just don't get them. Your are putting something on your body forever. What if you don't like them one day? Even if you get them "removed" they never fully go away. The Bible says your body is God's temple. Keep that in mind.

1) My self harm scars will be there forever too, so I would rather have them covered with something that helps me tell my testimony.
2) temples/churches often are decorated.

I got 2 tattoos after being saved. I'm hoping for a couple more. I've known countless Christians that have been tattooed, most having tattoos that are a reflection of their faith.
I think the 2 biggest factors to consider are 1) what you get, ensuring you aren't getting something shallow and random (like how everyone got tribal tattoos in the 90s) and 2) the placement. The more visible they are the more potential they have to make things difficult.

Also make sure you research what shop/artist you go to. Check out their style, their reputation, etc... also tattooing over scars is more difficult so you'll need to make sure, more than most, that who you go to is a quality artist.

Most legit shops won't tattoo you at 17 without parental consent. Or it used to be that way.

Every tattoo I get will have meaning. I have most of them planned out. I can tell you about them, and what they mean, if you would like.

Due to where the scars are, I can't exactly choose placement.

Legally, I believe tattoo artists can't tattoo without parental consent. So either I have to get my mom to agree as well, or I have to wait until I'm moved out.

Its unfortunate you have to deal with this at all. But it's good to see you're putting a lot if thought into all aspects of this.
And I understand the placement issue, but some employers may not ask, or care, what the reasons you have tattoos are, if they're in visible areas. So it may be better to hold off on one's that may be more visible. Which is probably the opposite of what you want to do.

I probably won't wait. I'd rather have a tattoo that makes job hunting difficult than to have these darn marks on my arm. Although my first tattoo will be hidden. My second wont.

It would be better to allow your words and action to be your testimony rather than the tattoos.

I think it is your choice I have been in your shoes. My self harm scars are mostly hidden anyways. When I started doing it it was not as. Common.
I hid it pretty well. I think tattoo to cover your sca can be a healing. Effect for you
As it seems you want to bury the dark part of your life. So. I understand. That
So I say go for it but make sure they are not big and are classy they also can be covered by a long shirt. Or something. Even though it is illegal to not hire. Someone. That has tattoos and such it does happen. When I finish college and one other goal I am going to get. A tattoo. Of a pheonix rising. Out of flames to signify I have been through pure heck in life but I have risen above it
No

I have a friend with a very similar tattoo as what you described. Its amazing.

A lot of what you said is accurate. Of course, as you said, you understand what I'm going through.

3 out of 4 of the tattoos will be small and classy, but the last one will be a full sleeve tattoo because there's just too much to cover.

If somebody is cutting my body they are either a surgeon or about to get shot between 7-16 times.

I would recommend others adopt a similar policy though I respect those who have been inked by a real artist. Some tattoos are really cool. Most are not worth the effort in an age where everybody seems to have one.

As for being a sin? I'd say it's a stronger brother, weaker brother thing. I wouldn't encourage somebody to get one if they are straddling the fence and I wouldn't discourage somebody who is frothing for the mouth for one.

The whole "I'm using it to bolster my witness" idea seems pretty silly. The Bible calls for no other outward sign outside our verbal proclamation of the gospel and a more Chirst-like conduct after salvation. Bumper stickers, t-shirts, etc are superfluous in that endeavor. So are tats.

It's an interesting contrast with the antichrist demanding an outward symbol on one's hand or forehead. Not saying that tats are satanic, but our Lord does not command them and it's worth contemplating why.

Full sleeve is fine just expect that some jobs you will need to cover it with long shirt. My advice would. Be cover them for all job interviews. Just to be safe then if hired see what policy they have p.s. I am glad you do not cut anymore very hard to stop good. For you
