Surely running out of gas is more exciting than that! I had a '66' mustang. My girlfriend lived a little over thirty miles away, and it didn't seem to matter all that much, that it was snowing hard. About ten miles in, I ran out of gas. Because of the storm, my only option was to hitch a ride. Sorry, no cell phones. I hope someone had a better out-come.

When I was a student, me and my friend went on our own tour without gas money (money was used for parties) and we came close but always made it to our next destination :)

I remember being in some remote part of Scotland, in a small village.
What we didn't know was there had been some sort of problem with the gas supply (strike maybe)?
The gas gauge got to the level where you start looking for a gas station .... we had to try four different ones in two or three villages before we got any! That made us a bit nervous...

Never. I've always been very scared of the thought of my car running out of gas in a remote part of nowhere...or in the middle of town.

Me. Like, on the day after I got my learners permit. Stupid car didn't make the alarm noise, and I was too busy thinking about the road. Four miles both ways to the gas stations. Fortunately there was a nice man at a store across the street that lent us his truck.

I think that was the same day I almost killed me and dad. I never knew how calm a person he was until then. There we were, seconds from dead, and he doesn't even raise his voice. Mom would have died on the spot.

A few years ago I was working on a rose farm a few km outside the city. I was having a busy day so I worked through lunch. I remembered that my fuel gauge was indicating that it was time for a top up, but I knew that the earliest I'd leave work would be at 6pm. I was in a Shakespeare play that week at our local theatre so I didn't want any delays as this place was on the other end of town. Factor in traffic and there isn't must time for anything else.

One of our workshop guys was going to buy some diesel for the standby generator at a filling station located some 5km from the farm. This place was not on my way as it was further out of town. I needed to be able to make a beeline for the theatre as soon as I locked my office later that day. So I grabbed a jerrycan from the storeroom and asked the guy to get me 20 litres petrol for my car. Half an hour later he returned and asked for my key. He then poured the liquid into my tank and returned my key. At the end of the day i was getting into my car when I saw the guy walking by. I said, "Thanks for getting the petrol." He replied "Diesel. I got you diesel."......:(....... Thankfully I hadn't started the car. At the time I was driving an old Pajero and we had to remove the tank, drain out the now contaminated fuel. Send the guy back for some petrol, because NOW my tank was empty!

They cleaned out the tank as best they could, put it back and put petrol in. In the meantime I was getting frantic calls from the theatre. Curtain was going up in a few minutes. They had to get some guy to take my spot in the first scene (an Asian looking guy whose scene was a lot later) I got there in time for my next scene. I only achieved this by dressing into my costume at the farm (I was unhappy with the theatres laundry so I had it dry cleaned. So a number of motorist did a double take when they saw this "Roman brother" - we were doing "Julius Caesar"driving a Pajero at breakneck speed. This must have confused the many high school literature students who were part of the audience. But what annoyed me most was that I should have put more fuel ON MY WAY TO WORK. Today my fuel level never goes below quarter tank.

The car used it all up too early a couple of times, but I've never run out... it was always the car's fault...

One of my cars had a fuel gauge that did not register anything less than a quarter tank. I was well aware of this fact but still ran out of gas at least once. It would have been shortly after I started driving again in 2000 after not having had a car since the mid eighties, so I was on an auto plan, and they rescued me, admonishing me to watch the fuel tank. Haha yeah, like I didn't already :D

That car had been given to me by a guy I was friends with and knew from when I first got clean and sober back in '94. He was a mechanic by trade, and used to do the oil changes and tune ups for me at a reduced rate at the garage where he was employed, so he had full use of all the equipment and such.

When he first gave me the car ('83 Toyota Tercel, a bit banged up but in good running condition), he told me to call him if I had any trouble. One of the first days I drove my new car to work, the first car I had had in years, it would not start at the end of the day when it was time to go home. I tried and tried to start the car, but every attempt was to no avail. The starter was not even turning over! It was a dark and rainy night... I phoned my friend, and waited quite a while for him to show up. Just before he got there, I noticed that instead of having moved the gear shift into park, I had put it in first gear, which is why the car would not start. I still had to wait for my friend to confess the oversight to him

Gear shift may not be the correct term, as it was an
automatic transmission, but you know what I mean, right? :D

Once while I was zipping along, I accidentally quickly shifted into park instead of downshifting to first to slow down. Wow, did I correct that move fast. No damage came from that haha.

I had that car for three years. At the end of those three years, the windows were not working properly, the driver door would not open, the defogger did not work, and who knows what else. I decided to bite the bullet and buy a car, so I asked my friend if he wanted the car back. He was actually in the process of looking for a car to get him through the winter, so he graciously took it off my hands after I bought my replacement car.

I bought an '89 Tercel that had 104K on it. I got a really good deal on it. One of my God stories is tied up in that acquisition. I was not a believer in those days, but quite actively seeking, and I actually thought about God things a lot in those days :D

So I was looking for a car to replace the free one my friend had given to me three years previously. Of course, any good car deal gets snapped up right away, and it can be quite a frustrating endeavor doing that type of search. I actually hired someone to help me look, but he just ripped me off, so that did not work :p

So one day when I saw what looked like a good car deal, I immediately called the person and arranged to leave work in the early afternoon to go check it out. It was outside Vancouver in an area I had some knowledge of, so despite the fact that her directions did not follow the route I would have normally taken, I thought it best to follow her directions. Novel concept for me! Follow directions! The problem was, of course, that she had totally given me the wrong instructions.

I drove around and round and ended up in the completely wrong city on an afternoon that was horribly beset by torrential rainfall and terrible traffic delays.
I was trying not to freak out, and I remember thinking about God's sense of humour while I was driving through the blinding rain trying to find a place to turn around on the highway without getting even more lost, and to believe that there was a reason I was being so obviously delayed in such a way. I finally made it to a phone to call her for new directions. Off I set again.

By the time I got to her place, someone else had the car out for a test drive. The owner and I sat chatting for a while, waiting for the other person to return with the car. I tried not to fret about them deciding to buy the car before I could even test drive it. When they returned, I recognized their voice as they spoke with the owner at the front door. He said the car was great and everything, but not what he was looking for, as he needed something to transport his aging parents around in, and the Tercel was not going to cut it. He also told her he knew cars very well, and due to the car's age and make etc, despite the low mileage, it was not worth the 4k asking price. So when I took the car for my test drive, and enthusiastically decided to buy, I was able to talk her down 800 dollars... due to my delay, which assured this other guy got there before me! That did seem a God thing to me...

I drove that car for over ten years and did not even put sixty thousand on top of the 104k I started with. Even so, it served me very well, though it did have problems at times holding the battery charge. I got jumper cables due of that, because on dark rainy nights when I needed both my lights and wipers operating, if I made a short stop, the car would often refuse to start again :p One time when the starter was dying, I counted over a hundred times before it fired up

Then I got an oil leak, and quite some time after that the cooling system started failing. Once again I went off in search of a car. I work full time and did not want to go through all I had the last time, phoning car owner after car owner only to find out the car had already sold while I was at work, and getting ripped off by someone who had promised to help me for pay. So I jumped at the first good car deal I saw, again a Toyota, this one the first year the Tercel went to Echo. I have had great luck with this car, and it is the first time I have had air conditioning :)
It is getting close to having 200k on it but still looks and runs great :D I have been driving this car for a few years now and never run out of gas!

I was in the van with my mom and brother's when we ran out. In the middle of town...you would think a gas station would be near by but NO. SERIOUSLY? IN THE MIDDLE OF TOWN AND AS FAR AWAY AS POSSIBLE FROM A STATION!! Fortunately we were able to kinda coast to the side of the road so people could get by us while my bro's went to the gas station. It was one of those "quick, get to the grocery store before it closes, and THEN get gas" kind of things, and it didn't work out.

Oh, and that other time :) when you're in the middle of nowhere where the lil towns are 30 miles apart and you know the next one has cheap gas so you run yourself low only to discover they're CLOSED. Yeppers. Another 30 miles. We made it on fumes and prayers :D
