I will have to say Pride and Prejudice...

Another I would put on this list is Contact. I know many might not see this as a love story, but it is. A man of the cloth falls for an atheistic scientist who is searching for intelligent life in the universe, and both are on a ceaseless quest for the truth, and desire to passionately disseminate it when found.

I like a lot of different movie styles and genres, and while rom com is amusing, and I have certainly seen a great deal of them over the years, not many even come to mind, because they are generally so easily forgotten.
I actually don't very much care for many of them, though I can laugh heartily and be greatly entertained and enjoy them while watching them...

Something like 50 First Dates leaves a lasting impression :)

Groundhog Day was also memorable. I don't care at all for things like Pretty Woman. I really liked Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and Shakespeare in Love. Who could forget Doctor Zhivago? I always liked Vertigo, also :)
Jane Austen was a brilliant writer and the BBC production of Pride and Prejudice was spot on. Like you, I find that rom-coms tend to just blend together in my mind, and that not many of them really stand out. 50 First Dates was hilarious. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind was so good! It is one of the few movies that I enjoy rewatching. Shakespeare in Love was also pretty good. I could never forget Doctor Zhivago - so good!

I love that you included Vertigo on your list!

I would submit Ever After to be added to the list of great romance movies. Hmmm... perhaps I just really like movies with Drew Barrymore in them. I really do like her acting.

A movie that I love is Fox and the Hound. While it is not a romance movie, it is a movie about lasting love.

Other favourites of mine include:
Benny and Joon
Chocolat (Johnny Depp, chocolate and love - what could be better?)
Lars and the Real Girl
It Happened One Night
Breakfast at Tiffany's
Purple Rose of Cairo

And yes, I really do like the movie 7 Brides for 7 Brothers. I have a soft spot in my heart for musicals and this movie makes me laugh every single time I watch it.

Phantom of the Opera is epic. I have seen it live 3 times now. The ending always makes me cry.

I'm giving a shout out to the love between Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy (so enduring), the movie Warm Bodies (zombies in love is always funny), and Dirty Dancing because Patrick Swayze. Patrick. Swayze. Sigh.... What can I say, I was 11 when I first saw Dirty Dancing and spent the next year kissing a poster of Patrick Swayze and wishing I was Baby.

And I cannot believe that I forgot the best movie of all time until now.... The Princess Bride. As you wish will always mean I love you to me.

It took me a while to think of any films for this thread : p
I actually really do like love stories and all that junk a bunch, but I rarely ever watch films (like I probly watch about 2-5 a year at most), so I always have a really hard time thinking of films I liked, haha.

I liked some Michael Cera films Ive seen though. I watched Juno a few years back, and I really liked that one a bunch.
Ive also seen Scott Pilgrim vs The World, and I liked that one alot too. BUT, I havent had the chance to watch the entire film yet : p Ive only seen like half of it, haha. I was way into it though, so Id like to finish it one day.

I remember watching Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind with my family back when I was like 16, and I remember really liking that one too. But I was the only person in my entire family that liked it, so apparently it was a bad film? Haha it was a long time ago, I should watch that one again.

I also really like the film The Frighteners, while not really a "romantic film" I did enjoy the love story between the two main characters.

I also really liked the animated film Mary and Max. I dont think it qualifies as a "romantic" film, due to the two not actually being a romantic couple, but they are very close and special long distance friends whose lives have a major impact on each other.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_and_Max

The character Max is an atheist, and I think that plays into the film a bit, which is lame. (I havent seen it in about five years or so, though, so I cant remember how much its played into the film. But I dont think its pushed too much)

I cant really think of any other films I liked at the moment, but I know there are others : p

7 Brides for 7 Brothers

A barn raising that ends in fisticuffs, group kidnapping, forced isolation and stockholm syndrome... all set to cheery music. What could be better??

I LOVE Seven Brides for Seven Brothers! It's my favorite musical. Adam was a jerk for most of the movie, though. :/

Oh my goodness!! I have never met anyone who loves this movie as much as I do! I just watched the clip and giggled and sang the song word for word. You're right, Adam really didn't know how to treat a lady. Good thing he got a feisty one to show him how she wanted to be treated! Frankincense was cutest brother though - such a sweetie!

I think we should start a musical movies thread!

It's my favorite musical, I love Howard Keel's voice. Deep and beautiful. I think Benjamin was the best looking one, and he ended up with the best looking girl, Julie Newmar. I don't even know which song is my favorite- probably Sobbin' Women, lol. My favorite scene is the June Bride scene where the girls dance in their corsets. :) Yes, DO start a musical thread and people can post their favorite clips. I sang along with it too- Lol, now I want to dig out the DVD and watch it. I almost posted The Princess Bride, as a favorite romantic movie- so I'm glad you did.

Die hard. The part where he kills all the East German robbers and rescues his wife. Chokes me up every time.

Frankenstein.

He just wanted to be loved...

and jolted with electricity.

Actually, that's starting to sound too much like a modern movie.

Benjamin IS the best looking one, Frankincense is the cutest in the "I just wanna pinch his cheeks" kind of way. My favourite scene is the barn-raising. The Sobbin' Women is definitely the best song.

Billy Crystal in The Princess Bride is hilarious but my heart was stolen by Andre the Giant in that film. He was just so sweet.

I'm getting the distinct impression that I do not have enough lace on my undies to continue participating in this thread.

I think the barn-raising scene is beautiful, a dancing tour de force. The guys look manly, while dancing. This is great choreography, like the choreography in Oklahoma! You believe these guys are lumberjacks and cowboys who just happen to know how to dance.

You are WRONG about The Princess Bride, the ONLY choice is Mandy Patinkin as Inigo Montoya. I had a crush on him as a little girl. My sisters and I rented the film about a million times. We knew every word. :)

How'd you guess? :).

The last one on my list is a repeat. I wanted to add Mr. Smith Goes To Washington.
Love of country? :) Jean Arthur is one of my favorites. She and Stewart are lovely in You Can't Take it With you (if you haven't seen it). She's great with Gary Cooper in Mr. Deeds Goes to Town.

Well... only you can answer that.
Tru dat. Can someone tell me what is the proper amount of lace to have on one's drawers? I don't want to be "that guy" who wears the ugly skivvies. LOL
