how have i never heard this before? did you all know about this and didn't tell me? :p

"Great God From Thee" (by John Newton... you know, the "Amazing Grace" guy ;))

"Great God from Thee there's nought concealed, Thou seest my inward frame
To Thee I always stand revealed exactly as I am
Since I can hardly therefore bear what in myself I see,
How vile and dark must I appear, Most Holy God, to Thee?

But since my Savior stands between in garments dyed in blood,
'Tis He instead of me is seen when I approach to God

Thus though a sinner I am safe; He pleads before the Throne
His life and death in my behalf, and calls my sins His own
What wondrous love, what mysteries in this appointed shine
My breaches of the Law are His, and His obedience mine"

my breaches of the Law are His, and His obedience mine. selah! ♥

do you have a current favorite hymn? will you share, please?

Psalm 40:3 – And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the Lord.

Any song (hymn) that is new to us is a new song. Many people use this verse as a reason to sing only contemporary music in the church, but if you look carefully, the verse is really saying the Lord is replacing your old (secular) songs with new (sacred) songs of praise unto our God. And why? So that many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the Lord.

Even though I have been working as a church musician for literally decades, I still find “new” songs everywhere! From the 8th century on up to today. The discoveries are fascinating, and they inform my walk with the Lord.

I did not know this particular hymn that you shared, but it’s absolutely wonderful. John Newton was a prolific hymnist!

Thank you for sharing it!

you're welcome! i think that hymn is relatively unknown; i could only find it in one online hymnal.
and we've pretty much always attended churches where the old hymns are sung almost exclusively, but not till recently have we sung it in church.

about what i bolded in your post.... really?? really really?

i hadn't known Newton wrote some 200 songs, either. prolific, indeed. :)

in my 20s and 30s i taught Sunday School to 4-6 year olds. when i asked them to guess my age, it was either 12 or 80.
