Modesty is the best policy they say. But personally I wouldn't ask for advice on this subject. For one you have extremists on the issue. Another thing is what is right for one person is not right for another person. Basically what I'm saying is dress how you want too and do what you feel is right in Gods eyes. Take it to God and if you feel something is not right don't do it. If you are very concerned on this and you are scared you will fall into sin, wear a space suit. You can never go wrong when your wearing a space suit.

Quote "Modesty is the best policy they say."

Umm thats honesty, honesty is the best policy ;) But modesty is good too.

Modesty tends to be relative.

I wouldn't wear a swimming costume to church, but I would if I went swimming!
So what's wrong with this picture, the item of clothing or the setting.

I would wear shorts and a sleeveless vest type of thing when I do the gardening in
hot weather, but I wouldn't wear that to a job interview.

(Just playing devil's advocate) :)

I think it would be interesting to hear how men dress modestly, as somehow
this subject always becomes a "woman cover thy self up" topic. Lol

Baw ha ha :D

I remember when platforms, side burns and drain pipes were considered sexy, now people
would laugh their socks off if you had them.

I was just thinking -
I don't think there's any particular scripture telling MEN to dress modestly.

Apparently God doesn't think I'm irresistible...
or that the ladies will be especially tempted.

Whatever... I'll just imagine whatever I like.

****sure---haven't you heard people say to guys--"don't lose your shirt"... (personally I think men are suppose to "act" modest----sure there must be Scripture on this---in other words when men act like apes or casanovas this can be a distraction to women...

As a Christian woman, dressing has always been a challenge to me. The bible uses the word modesty but then sometimes peoples definition of modesty varies. as christians we all want to please God in all we do including our dressing. so we would want to be sure the jeans isn't too tight, the top too revealing or the dress too short. pleasing God doesn't mean you have to look bad or unfashionable, I believe but how can we be sure we're being "modest". this issue is constantly under debate in my youth church. any ideas?
This might vary according to different people's opinions. What you don't want to do is knowingly wear something provocative.

Well I do believe in male modesty, which is why I try to not wear "tight" clothes. Also because they're not very comfortable. The guys here will understand. :D

Modesty varies and is largely dependent on motivations. If you're wearing something it shouldn't be so that people will notice you. There's nothing wrong with thinking you look good in an outfit but if you're wearing an outfit so people will notice you or different parts of your body, then that's being immodest.
Other than that, some guiding principals that everyone (men and women) should follow are to make sure nothing sexual is exposed. A lot of people seem to think it's cool to have pants slipping down so that part of one's rear is exposed. That is immodest. A woman doesn't need to have the top button of a blouse always buttoned but neither should she have a plunging neckline. And if she finds that she's intentionally unbuttoning a blouse or wearing something slightly low cut because she want's people to notice her breasts, than that's immodest. Likewise, a man shouldn't walk around in public with his shirt off. It's one thing when it's at home or at a friend's house, but in stores, shops, or on the street? I'd say that's immodest.

As for what's too short, that's going to be cultural and situational, as well as dependent on motivations. For me, I usually keep skirts and shorts mid-thigh or longer. If it's a professional environment or at church, I'd go knee-length or longer. However, I think mid-thigh's the shortest a skirt should be. Any shorter and other body parts might be exposed.
Too tight...I don't think anything should cling to your body, outlining every curve. Clothing doesn't need to be baggy, but it should leave something to the imagination.

Now, all that being said, those are my opinions. The Bible never gives exact cut-off points, which is why I say a lot of it is guided by what motivates people to wear things and the situation (ex. I'd never say it was immodest to wear a bathing suit to the beach even though they show more skin than would be proper in other situations). I think in church, it's best to err on the side of caution.

While I agree as a christian we shouldn't dress all trashy and disrespectful, we have to keep in mind, the clothes we wear won't lead us to heaven. Whatever clothes you wear you can always worship him.

I have seen men who could dress more moderately : p

Im honestly not even comfortable when guys walk around without shirts. Like when its really hot out, I can understand a bit. But other than that theres no reason to not wear a shirt.

A guideline I suggest is don't show anything you don't want a stranger to touch.

If you are trying to be sexy, then you are doing it wrong. Let's not be coy, here. Grown women know EXACTLY how to dress and how not to dress. If you are a child or teenager, then perhaps you don't know what's what- but grown women know the score.
