As a Christian woman, dressing has always been a challenge to me. The bible uses the word modesty but then sometimes peoples definition of modesty varies. as christians we all want to please God in all we do including our dressing. so we would want to be sure the jeans isn't too tight, the top too revealing or the dress too short. pleasing God doesn't mean you have to look bad or unfashionable, I believe but how can we be sure we're being "modest". this issue is constantly under debate in my youth church. any ideas?

I believe that modest is a matter of opinion. I'm sure that you would recognize immodesty if you saw it. I think that your description sounds about right. Glad to have you join us. Welcome to CC.

Modesty is the best policy they say. But personally I wouldn't ask for advice on this subject. For one you have extremists on the issue. Another thing is what is right for one person is not right for another person. Basically what I'm saying is dress how you want too and do what you feel is right in Gods eyes. Take it to God and if you feel something is not right don't do it. If you are very concerned on this and you are scared you will fall into sin, wear a space suit. You can never go wrong when your wearing a space suit.

Did the Bible ever speak to showing too much skin? Showing cleavage? Too much leg? Just what DID the Bible say?

I think it would be interesting — and certainly a novel approach — to determine what the Bible says about modesty, rather than what we have decided it is.

I suppose its a matter of your conscience. What is the intent behind your apparel? Is it to cause men's or women's eyes to wander and take a gander or is it simply to be presentable for the occasion? Modesty is at times very subjective, but the important factor here is that your own conscience is clean, knowing the intent behind your appearance.

God knows the heart, and we cannot determine what to wear based upon others, otherwise we will always be held in contempt to other's judgments. We simply need to be ourselves, with our own individuality, and wear what we please, so long as we know that our intent is pure.

I understand the premise of not causing a brother or sister to stumble, but to what degree are we responsible for the eyes of others? They need to practice self control, and purity of mind. Sure we may play a small part in that we shouldn't dress in such a way as to intentionally cause another to lust, but to become fanatical to the degree that we show no skin, for example, is absurd.

We don't live our lives determined by the whims of others, otherwise we simply are a piece of clay molded by the opinion of others. Be yourself, pure in intent, and let them in God's process be sanctified from lust and allow themselves to practice self control.

For me, clothes are a matter of education and good-taste, not of spirituality.

One point of modesty is cost wise, which God said do not wear costly apparel, for it is not needful for us,so buy at modest prices, and not high cost, and flashy.

Another point is if it sparks lust of the other sex, attracts them to lust at the way people dress, that could spark lust or increase their lust.

I do not believe that God allows make-up,or jewelry, for people to wear, which have always been the nations ways, like Egypt.

1Ti 2:8 I will therefore that men pray every where, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting.
1Ti 2:9 In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array;
1Ti 2:10 But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works.

Willie,

I don't know what you're thinking, but you don't you dare come on here showing too much cleavage.

The women here have enough temptation as it is.

how we dress has a lot to do with our self-image'...we should never dress for attention from others
or to try to make ourselves provocative or sexual...of course this is what the world does,
but anyone who names The Name of Christ as their Saviour, should always dress nice, but modestly...

The group is only as strong as the weakest male's mind.

Or, possibly, only as strong as the gal who deliberately chooses to dress provocatively in order to draw attention to fill a void of what she is not receiving at home.

That is correct. Good point. I just assumed she already knew what the scripture has to say on that issue.

I figured if I'm worried what I'm wearing may or may not be modest, then chances are good it isn't.

This usually turns into a fight when we discuss the topic.

When I was growing up, my grandmother would insist I get clothes from Ann Taylor or Lane Bryant. Her thinking was they pick clothes that will transcend any particular year's style, and they're well made so they'll last longer.

When I grew up, I tended toward changing my mind -- always grappling between price and need. Finally the matter has been settled.

I became disabled in 1999, thus couldn't work anymore, thus money got tight and I've been wearing mostly what I bought before then or soon after. Well, wearing it until it fell apart anyway.

My brother was getting married a few years ago and my sister was on FB complaining that she couldn't find a good dress for the wedding. I started PM'ing her to offer her a beautiful gown I only wore once, until I remembered when I wore it. I wore it to Dad's wedding. Or, I wore it to an event that happened 11 months before she was born. (Quality dress. lol)

I have blouses, skirts, and dresses I bought when I was first married 35.5 years ago. I lost clothes I bought in the 1990's because they died. That's the difference between expensive and cheap. Expensive last a lifetime. Cheap last 3-5 years. Both expensive and cheap were never immodest. I'm just not that type of person.
