As long as it normally takes for a movie to go from theaters to DVD, I think I'll try to get a copy of the book first. I wasn't aware that this movie was based from a book until this thread was started, and I have always preferred books to their screen adaptations.
The audio version is posted in this thread.... and several pdf versions can be found online.

After reading some of the comments about the movie from the few who saw it, I'll probably go see it. It sounds like it might have a good message that I could use. I want to recommend another movie, A Dogs Purpose. My Daughter and I loved it. It was so good and had such a nice story.

Just saw the movie this afternoon.

There are those of you here who will FREAK at this movie, and probably curse everything about it.

And then, there are the people here who will see Jesus as you have often prayed the whole world could see Him. This movie is probably the one movie you should not miss, if you go to no other this whole year.
Worth going to see this? Might go see it is it's available in cinemas over here (in the UK)

My church is moving to a movie theatre soon :( The seats may be great and all, and the whole experience might be wonderful. I simply use the unhappy smiley face because we are leaving behind a wonderful location with a beautiful view... movie theatres don't have windows, but I guess people should not be watching the birds in the trees, or the ducks in the pond, and the dog walkers and cyclists making their rounds on the beach side paths while pastor is preaching :D Also, we will not have to put the chairs away every week :) That is a definite plus :)

There I a church here in a neighboring town that's in an old movie theater. IMO the sanctuary felt opprosive but that's just me.

I've been reading the e-book the last 2 evenings and will finish it tonight. I have enjoyed it quite a lot. I can see why it infuriates some people, but I think that sometimes a person needs to be upset by something to have an opportunity for reflection so they don't become stagnant in their own growth. Just my opinion for what it's worth.

Kinda reminds me of how much Jesus infuriated and upset people. LOL

Read the book. After that I refused to recommend it to anyone else. And with the movie coming out seeing all sorts of posts on my fb speaking against it. Was very subtle new age to me.

In what way?

The book is not, in any way, "new age". It challenges preconceived opinions and notions of God, and THAT is what gets people riled up. Good. Get mad. Get upset. Rant and rave. Dig into your Bible that you hold in such high reverence for and find something that counters what you've read. What upsets you so much? The statement at the shore of the lake where Jesus said that HE is not a Christian? Does that offend your delicate sensibilities? Good. It was supposed to. You are supposed to be provoked to think and to take stock of what you believe and why you believe it. If it makes your butt hurt to have your tenuous views on religion challenged, then you missed the point and the message. You obviously aren't as smart or learned as you think you are. Bruises to the ego hurt, don't they?

We actually have quite a few theatres that are now used as church spaces; so many theatres have closed with the digital age, and I have to admit, I hardly ever go to theatres any more either! The last couple of times have been when my daughter has taken me to see a movie, both times in 3D: eight years ago it was Avatar, and then more recently it was Doctor Strange :D

I got an email yesterday that a group from our church is going to see the shack Sunday afternoon. My Husband wants to go so we're going to go. I'll let you know what I think. Yesterday a co worker and I were talking about the book, she's never read it. I said, it's a good book, sad but delivers a good message that I think we could all use. Now she doesn't want to read it because it's sad. I felt bad, not that I'd force anyone to read anything but I feel like I turned her off from it.

I read the book. Neither the book or the movie define God. I don't define God he is who He is and He defines me. I do define the manner in which i relate to God and if this movie causes anyone to rethink how they relate to God this is well and good. It is a work of fiction folks :)

I saw the movie today. I enjoyed it, I really didn't find it new age like or anything. I cried a lot but I cried reading the book too. I cried a little when baby Dory lost her parents in Finding Dory, so yes folks I'm a cryer.

Im glad I saw the movie. To me the story is deep. We all have had things that have caused us pain and moving on from that can be really hard. A lot of raw emotion there. The acting was also very good.

I haven't read the book nor seen the movie but my aunt told me all about it. She read the book several years ago and I didn't like what I heard. I might give the movie a try...but I'm hesitant. Why a woman? Sounds like feminist agenda to me.

I agree with many here that the book has some doctrinal issues but the book is a work of fiction, not a theological text.

The author had no agenda (feminist or otherwise) since the original manuscript was only intended to be distributed to the author's family as an allegory explaining his own spiritual journey.

Both the book and the movie VERY clearly explained "why a woman", yet your aunt seems to have totally missed that essentially important reason.

Nope, my aunt loved the book and saw the movie yesterday. She recommended I watch it. She just told me straight up what was going to happen because it was a little strange for her. She still loved the story though.

Oncefallen, maybe the author didn't have an agenda but the producers could have. You never know.

Well then, you do know "why a woman." That was one of the most important things brought right out in the early part of him (Mack) meeting Papa.

I don't know why. My aunt did not explain. She just told me that a woman was playing God. She didn't want to reveal too much in case I ever decide to see or read it. Like I said, one day I might give it a try.
