Every time a troll comes on here, people say ignore them and they'll go away. Yet those same people DON'T ignore the troll and opt to engage in banter with them. Put up or shut up. Practice what you preach..

You're usually the one who calls us fools for engaging trolls, or else you tell us TO engage them because they might be sincere..Make up your mind..
No, my point has always been NOT TO FEED THEM by encouraging them to continue right on with their fantasy BS. And many people here do that by joining in, acting like they are asking serious questions. It often seems like the ones answering somehow LIKE to be made fools of, and actually crave to be laughed at by the trolls..

Shut off their garbage, and make them know you will talk.... but only if they knock the nonsense off.

That's the point. They DON'T cut off their bs.. And those who are genuinely trying to help them, get made fun of for it and that's not right.. Trolls or not, they're people!!

Yes they are still people. And we need to try to reach them. But It cannot be a one-way street where we act like we are oblivious to what they are doing. That is not helping them. It's just enabling. Our pretending to go along with them makes them feel what they are doing is fine and that it is not being seen for what it is.

What's the difference between a troll and someone who is just saying things people might not like (This is a rhetorical question, and something I felt I should add to this thread out of a desire to show appreciation for certain people)? Personally, I've come to some pretty sobering realizations just because someone had the nerve to interject something I did not want to hear in a manner that was pretty brutal (taste of my own medicine).

Some nerve. Good.

Are you noticing that I am NOT saying they will cut out the garbage if we just wait? We all have to BLUNTLY tell them their BS is not acceptable, and to start communicating correctly.

It is the same way we disciplined our children.... or we SHOULD have. Because these trolls are usually religiously hurt and ignored children who are seeking any kind of attention they can get. And they (just like children) find it easier to elicit (actually, "incite") negative responses from us than it is to accept some of the responsibility for an equal exchange.

Well, usually, they are new people here. It is rare that a normal person is going to burst right into any heretofore unbreached social situation without putting out some "feelers", and receiving some indicators of how the local waters are, and how their ideas would best be introduced.

Seeing what they can get away with? Haha. Almost sounds like a good thing when you say it like that.

I think the most important thing to get across to Trolls is, "Hey! I see you for what you are. But, I still actually see "you." And, I can (and will) accept you, warts, problems, fears, hatreds, hang-ups, phobias, psychoses, perversions, and all.... despite the mask you are presently trying to claim is really YOU."

"But, we are neither one going to get anywhere, if we continue on this present course."

So I hope this isn't improper. A thread was just closed. It was 30+ pages long and I came in on the end.I just got the truth of what the person was saying when the thread was closed. So here's the question, how do we know when a person is trolling? Ive called it before and been rebuked by all for saying so. So if you ought not to respond to a troll or trouble maker, what have you,how am I suppose to know who is or is not a troll? Any thoughts?
I get into debates with people, and someone tells me later it was a troll. It just shows you how dumb I am.

I usually see them but some of them go on and on for pages before finally being pinned down to what they really believe. We have a new person that just introduced themselves as an atheist. They're being upfront about their beliefs,I respect that more. At least we have a starting point for discussion.

Nothing wrong with some good debate. You might honestly reach them that way. But I balk at just continually objecting to be objecting, with no attempt to try and reason together.

This seems to be true from time to time, though I'd say what can be even better than that, is having them do that yet they might think on something they might have never thought about until the visit here. Hopefully if all possible to be positive, though I'm the first to admit it can be challenging for them and me as well.. lol.. :) I think learning can be of a two way street per say, for God works in mysterious ways, and we don't really know where or when that will be. "eyes and ears open, slow to speak quick to think" is of great value, easier said than done indeed hehe..
