Are secular TV shows that touch on religious topics good or bad for Christianity? Like the TV show "Saving Grace" from a few years ago. Or the current TV show "Supernatural." Both of these shows feature characters based on biblical topics, but do not necessarily have Christian themes. One of the main characters in Saving Grace is an angel. The show Supernatural features angels and demons, and often mentions God. There are probably other TV shows and movies I could mention as well (e.g., The Preacher, Lucifer, etc.).

Are such shows good or bad for Christianity?

Arg, I hate supernatural > : (

I had friends, and my mother too, they were all big fans of the show. I remember watching it, and like the actor playing the devil, or at least one of the angels that followed him, said something about the "wisdom of men", and how they should stop and listen to it.

I hate shows like this : p While yes, a more mature Christian will be able to roll their eyes at nonsense like this, a young and impressional mind will absorb it and believe that its the truth. All forms of art and entertainment have the power of influence. Music, television, videogames, books, all of them can completely affect the way a person thinks and what they believe. While shows like supernatural are based somewhat on teachings from the Bible, its by no means a Christian tv show : p

I find most shows with religious topics barely every get it right. I don't think I've ever heard of a secular show telling someone to give their heart to Jesus. In fact it's the opposite. I've heard about supernatural and the fact that my athiest friends like it is enough to keep me far away.

You will rarely any christian shows on the major stations that truthfully & faithfully represent God and the holy scriptures. There will always be a wicked twist or an agenda behind it. If the show is in no way leading people to jesus it's just more useless entertainment

You don't even have to go to TV or movies to find religious fiction. Most of our pulpits preach it... traditional or progressive.

These shows always put New-Age Movement agendas into their Christian Themes. Supernatural denies the validity of The Bible, and they portray God as sexually promiscuous and "Bi-Sexual".

I would say these shows warp the perception of Christianity and The Truth to further evil agendas. They are bad for Christianity, of course one could argue that some mention of Christianity is better than nothing. I would say that "nothing" is better in the case of fictional tv shows, because there are better sources.

What men intended for evil God can use for good. These shows never get it right.

But I remember watching "The last temptation of Christ", which was all kinds of heretical, that got me more interested in reading the Bible.

This is sort of the way I feel. Except I don't think Hollywood made these shows in an attempt to be evil. They just wanted to generate revenue. And they don't particularly care about being accurate to the bible.

I actually like watching some of these shows—like Supernatural, Saving Grace and The Preacher. (I've never seen the show Lucifer.) Do I get biblical information from them? Of course not. But I do think they serve a purpose. They pique people's interest in the bible by showing angels, demons and such—even though it's the Hollywood version of these things that are featured in the shows.
