I get the feeling you are talking about
1John1:9
King James Version(KJV)

9.)If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Watching the figure skaters at the ice rink at the mall spin around in circles is very impressive, or at least it is to me. How do they do it?

I was thinking in terms of making the effort to resist temptation.

"He forgave you before you repented. That’s crucial. See, that is why it is so outrageous. The gospel is really vulgar, crass and immoral because it says God forgives the world before it repents. In the gospel, repent is always repent and believe. It means turn yourself around from not trusting the forgiveness and trust it. That’s it. It doesn’t mean that you earn it by repenting. You had it before. " - Robert Farrar Capon

Dunno who first wrote this, so I cannot give them credit, but it definitely wasn't me.
100 Points to Heaven (taken from Inspirational Stories )

A man dies and goes to heaven. As usual, St. Peter meets him at the pearly gates.

St. Peter says, “Here’s how it works. You need 100 points to make it into heaven. You tell me all the good things you’ve done, and I give you a certain number of points for each item, depending on how good it was. When you reach 100 points, you get in.”

“Okay” the man says, “I attended church every Sunday”

“That’s good, says St. Peter, “that’s worth two points”

“Two points?” he says. “Well, I gave 10% of all my earnings to the church”
“Well, let’s see,” answers St. Peter, “that’s worth another 2 points. Did you do anything else?”

“Two points? Golly. How about this: I started a soup kitchen in my city and worked in a shelter for homeless veterans.”

“Fantastic, that’s certainly worth a point, ” St. Peter says.

“Hmmm…,” the man says, “I was married to the same woman for 50 years and never cheated on her, even in my heart.”

“That’s wonderful,” says St. Peter, “that’s worth three points!”

“THREE POINTS!!” the man cries, “At this rate the only way I get into heaven is by the grace of God!”

“Come on in!”

The Lord will discipline you until you repent of your sin. It's for your own good.

grace (n.)

late 12c., "God's unmerited favor, love, or help," from Old French grace "pardon, divine grace, mercy; favor, thanks; elegance, virtue" (12c., Modern French grâce), from Latin gratia "favor, esteem, regard; pleasing quality, good will, gratitude" (source of Italian grazia, Spanish gracia; in Church use translating Greek kharisma), from gratus "pleasing, agreeable," from PIE *gwreto-, suffixed form of root *gwere- (3) "to favor" (source also of Sanskrit grnati "sings, praises, announces," Lithuanian giriu "to praise, celebrate," Avestan gar- "to praise")

How do you think God deems "repent"? The thief on the cross didn't have much time to prove he was a new and better person

If the Lord isn't disciplining you, He hasn't accepted you as a son. When are you going to repent and believe the forgiveness you already have in Christ?

With the Lord, a millisecond is more than enough time.

While there is plenty of that in the OT, I cannot remember Jesus every disciplining someone to have them repent.
He simply told them either to go away and stop sinning, or to follow him. He didn't chase them down with a whip (Except from the sellers in the temple, but I doubt he did that in order to have them become "his children"
