I sometimes log on to see what highschool friends are up to....and of course their lives seem peachy and rosy ....people only put their best foot forward......but I find it so fake and vain people putting up selfies and getting syrupy comments and likes .I am thinking of minimizing my time on there even though curiosity gets the better of me sometimes.

What are peoples thoughts?

I don't know about "depressing", but it sure does seem "shallow" to me.

i heard a guy talk about this once....

he related a personal story of he and his wife taking their little kids to the park.
he said he and his wife bickered all day, the kids misbehaved all day, there was strife and tension all day.
at the end of their park time, they handed their camera to a stranger and asked him to take a family photo.

when they got home, he posted this one picture of them all smiling for the camera on FB and captioned it
"Great day at the park!"

i had to leave FB after a couple of years. even among Christians it seemed competitive, and there are just too many pictures of what people are eating. ;)

I do not have Facebook, so that eliminates the problem you are talking about. I used to, but realized I couldn't stand all the drama and garbage that people put on there so I live the real life and I am happy and content with that :)

I closed down my fakebook account about 3 years ago i think... Fakebook is just a information hoover for the elites.. So many people end up revealing too much about themselves on fakebook..

idk if it's just folks being affected by the milieu? but yes, there was a sort of one-upmanship i found disturbing.

i'm sorry it's the way you can keep in touch with old friends and it's awful. :(

i mean... i began to wonder if my believing friends were following the trends set by the unbelieving?

but there's also a terrible thing in the Church where we all wear masks and don't feel we can share griefs and sorrows and failings.

it really isn't helpful to those around us or to ourselves. if we can't be safe with one another as the Body of Christ, who can we be safe with?

My experience is quite the opposite. It all began when someone from the small town I was raised in started a Facebook page for people who had grown up in that town. Many of us have moved away but cherish the memories we had growing up. In the process, I've reconnected with some fantastic people who were my classmates. I spend ten or fifteen minutes each day on Facebook reading posts and watching videos.

Agreed. It's as if they enter a different dimension of glitz, sugar, photo filters and bragardoccio ....with all the beatitudes out of the window!
I think it was wise of you to leave....I hope to do the same soon.

I used facebook to connect with family and share treasured photographs for an upcoming huge family reunion that I actually never attended because I chose to go to my mother's funeral earlier the same year instead. However, even in the short time I was there, I found it very disturbing how people I hardly even knew forty years ago now were wanting to friend me. What could I possibly share with those people? There are already too many demands on my time :p After a certain incident, I shut down my page as much as possible and have not been back since, for the greater part of a decade. Because, you know, you can check out any time you like, but you can never leave :D

Yes, that is the creepiest part about the site.Once you have overshared and come to your senses - it is too late and you will always have an account floating out there in cyber space.

And I. It's just a bit rare to have the ears tickled by it.

Actually, I thank Facebook and Twitter for all the hilarious "Top Ten Dumbest Posts" Youtube videos that spawned from them.

I find CC more depressing than FB. On FB I can control what I want to see, or not see. I've had very little problems with drama because I limit who I add. And those I do add, and feel obligated to keep, that I don't want to see, I just unfollow.
Come to CC and it's not uncommon for me to close it out feeling worse than before I opened it. Which is one reason I cut back so much compared to a few years ago.
Seems if FB is that much of a problem for you perhaps you need to reconsider who you add and follow.
