I have had hundreds of people die in my life. Wife, children, parents, grandparents, friends, enemies, acquaintances, strangers, fellow soldiers, worker friends, patients in my care..... and the list could go on and on.

But the only deaths that have really torn me apart are the little animals that I have lost, especially this last dog I had to have put to sleep last year.

Most of the time I don't care too much that I seem to lack empathy for all the world. But, sometimes this really perplexes me.

I can understand that my friend, IMO I think its the seeing of the innocent that is notice in those moments, Surely in this world people have seen more than people should have of the opposite of innocent, yet that inter compassion, love and hope for life isn't lost even in times of loss.

Life has made me witness a lot of bad stuff...but my good buddy, ol' Jim Beam, gives me some relief when the nights gets too tough.

He used to help me some, too. Till the doctor said, "Not one more drop." about 4 years ago.

I was torn up by deaths of relatives I was close to.

Until I was born again and knew the Lord.

Now I have empathy for people who experience loss of relatives through death. But I myself know that the people closest to me are going to a good place.

So I have very little sadness about them going to a better place. It would be like being sad when you were a kid that your best friend was going to disneyland. Poor guy, right?

Hi Willie-T, I understand what your saying all to well
I lost a lot of loved ones but when I lost my sweet old dog...that was the worst
they are sweet and always happy to see you no matter what
Heck, they are just plain old HAPPY no matter what
Animals have a way about them, such goodness comes from them
never a bad day, sweet, kind loving no matter what

Reminds me of the MASH episode when they had a puppy in the compound and Hotlips went to pieces when it got run over.

I think it must have something to do with the way they never seem to be self-centered. It is like they live out something we cannot manage. They seem to simply live for the pleasure of others.

The loss of love is always devastating. It is our most cherished "possession."
It is at the center of who we are and why we live, what we live for, and where
our hope is. An early "tell" for someone who might turn into the worst type
of person is one who has no love, empathy, or compassion for animals.

I am one of those who believe that animals are a living soul as we are, and
will be with us in the life to come. God created them before mankind, and
saw that they were good. They played no part in the fall of creation, and yet
they suffer alongside us because of the choice mankind made to follow self
will over the express desire of God. The unconditionally loving relationship
we are able to develop with our pets informs us of who we are as people.

One of the things I have mused upon is how most of our pets do not live
anywhere near as long as humans do, and so help, in a way, to prepare us
to accept the inevitability of death as we understand it... the first death.

Where would we be without love? It was for love that God created us, and
out of love that He sent His only Son to redeem us from the consequence
of sin, which is death. Pets add immeasurably to our enjoyment of life, and
teach us many lessons on love and responsibility and having simple pleasure.

Thank you, God, for the beauty you have created in giving us pets.

Thank you, Magenta! I've felt alone in this very same way of thinking, not wanting to express it to people who may not understand. ~ My dog, Eddi, died tragically while we were on vacation at the coast. She was leashed, obedience trained, and loved the water. While walking on a pedestrian underpass, ironically for her safety from traffic, in her excitement she jumped a 4 foot wall with a 35 ft drop to the bay. I only had 16' of leash and she was strangling to death. She weighed 85 pounds..... and I couldn't pull her up... I lost grip of her leash and she fell into the bay. The surf was high and she was gone in seconds. My only solace, is she's with the Lord. The horrific visions never leave my mind.

Oh, JoDel, that is so tragic and I can understand the horror you experience with remembering how Eddi died... my heart breaks for you, and your loss. But! The best way to honor Eddi is to remember how she lived :) She lived with your loving care and kindness and protection and love and she was cherished and she knew it. She lived joyfully and loved you unconditionally and you had the distinct pleasure of loving her in return. The healing power of such love is... immeasurable. Let those be your memories of Eddi :) I pray the terrible visuals of seeing her fall to her death and being swept away leave you. What breed of dog was she? Rottweiler comes to mind for some reason...

My grandmother was sad after an animal had died (I think it was a dog) and the Lord gave her a vision of Jesus in Heaven surrounded with every pet animal she had ever had!
I hope this brings comfort.
