So the other day, I was in a meeting with my boss and found out I am being laid off because the business is going under. I have three weeks of guaranteed work so it will give me time to find something else, which I am thankful about....but I was devastated. I decided to have a day for myself and asked my bf if he wanted to come since work has been rough for him, but he declined. We both went our separate ways to think about life. I ended up going to the mountains and went hiking. When I came back I felt rejuvenated and that I was able to finally think clearly and know everything will be okay.

What would you do if you had a day to do what you want?

I'm sorry things didn't work out, Renewed. :( Still trying to think of what I'd do if I had a day to do anything.

Not sure where you live but I live in Southern Michigan so we don't have big mountains. I have been to New Hampshire a couple times. I LOVE the mountains! I would probably do the same thing you did and go for a nice hike. I can't wait to go back or go to a place with great atmosphere and scenery like NH or a place with big mountains. Good choice!

If I had a day entirely to myself and no family or work.

I'd lay in the grass and question my purpose in life. And read. And work out. Ride a four Wheeler for no reason but fun. Go mudding.... Make mud if needed lol. But mostly I'd question when I was waking up and if it'd be depressing when this dream was over. Lol.

Let me check to see how good my memory is:
Didn't you just get that job, a job you love, about half a year ago or so?

If memory is correct... ahhhhhh, man! Finding a job is hard enough, finding a job you love is twice as hard!

That said... to answer your question.

You're going to have to be clearer. I can't work, hubby can't work, and we both battle insomnia, so "a day to yourself" means all kinds of things to me.

I'm having one today, but it's a working day anyway. The phone calls have been made, the chicken and potatoes are cooked, and now waiting to cool off, so I can turn them into salads (or a salad. Haven't made up my mind yet.) Next is pitting cherries to make dessert, but kind of stuck on when to start, because a delivery is coming, and I hate messy hands when the doorbell rings. Sometime today (and we're in the middle of a heatwave, so really don't feel like doing this at all), I have to water the garden. And, of course, the laundry needs folding.

Typical "day by myself."

A good day by myself is spending hours futzing in the garden, or writing a short story, or gabbing online all day.

BUT if I could do anything -- health and finances not being a problem -- what would I love to do? That's a problem. Because I get so many days by myself, all the big dreams and ideas include other people.

(Immediately my mind went to having lunch with my friends on the Veranda, going to the zoo with hubby, or going down to VA... or even MS, to visit relatives I miss dearly, but can't go see.)

I think "day for yourself" is much like women thinking of curly v. straight hair. If you have curly, you want straight, and if you have straight you want curly. Having so many days for myself, I want curly... errrr, days with company. lol

If I had a day to myself, I would shut off my phone, go to a cave in the mountains where no one can find me and spend some time reflecting on where my life is going. And maybe enjoy the nature for sometime as well.

Now, can I give you a bit of comfort from the other end of life? I've had quite a few jobs back in the days when I could work. It was always hard for me to get a new one. On average, it took me five months to get a new job. My record wait was 13 months. (My record on the other end was before the end of that work day. It was Day 90 on the three-month probation for the new job, and I had learned I hated it with a passionate, so I wanted to quit before the end of the day when my boss's bosses were going to fire me. So I called my old boss and asked if I could return. Yup, I could. Therefore, I quit before they fired me. lol) Times were good. (When we were engaged, future-hubby made it clear that he would take care of me if I chose to quit another bad job, so I gave notice that at the end of my "vacation -- aka "honeymoon" -- I wouldn't be returning. And then I tried being a housewife for a while -- didn't take -- so there was no urgency to get a new job then. So, times were very good.) And times were bad. (More than once we were out of money or close to out of money, and needing a job NOW.)

One thing was consistent in all my story. God IS good. I have lived on pressed ham sandwich with one thin slice per two pieces of bread and popcorn as my sole source of food for months, and yet, I ate when I needed to eat. I know what a foreclosure letter from the mortgage company looks like, know it gives 90 days before we have to evacuate, and yet 69 days later, God gave us a way to stay, even when our finances had not changed and we still couldn't afford the mortgage. (Still living in that house.) I have scrounged into the crevices of furniture and back car seats to find coins to pay for food or gas. ($.57 worth of gas once, in the days when that bought one gallon of gas, with a penny left over. lol)

With or without money, God has always provided us with the very basics of life. For years, his message to me was "trust me for a job." And when I finally learned that, his next one was "trust me even without a job."

No matter how scary it gets, he really does always provide. What is tough is he never tells us how this particular situation will work out though.

Sounds good to me.

But you won't have to shut off your phone.
Most times they won't get signal in a cave in a mountain.

I know for sure...

The funny thing is, people think that when you are unemployed you have all the time in the world to do stuff.
Truth is, I did more (free time- stuff) in a week when working full-time than I did in a year of being unemployed :p

What I do depends a bit on the weather. Today I am planning to go see Dunkirk at the cinema.

I would take myself off to the beach and just sit and watch to ocean.
I would reflect on Job 37-41

this amazes me

Job 38:8-11
8 “Or who shut in the sea with doors,
When it burst forth and issued from the womb;
9 When I made the clouds its garment,
And thick darkness its swaddling band;
10 When I fixed My limit for it,
And set bars and doors;
11 When I said,
‘This far you may come, but no farther,
And here your proud waves must stop!’

One of my favorites!

Oh man, where were you??

Job 38:1:..... just keep going.
