It is about that time: time to buy back to school supplies! I got mine this weekend (tax free holiday) and only have a few things left to buy. If you are a parent, here are some tips:

(1) If your child needs a binder, invest in a zippered one. It will last all year and has the advantage of being zippered so all his things won't spill out of his binder.

(2) Plastic folders are the way to go, they don't tear like paper ones.

(3) Glue sticks are better than bottles which leak and are messy.

(4) Ticonderoga pencils are the BEST. They are made of harder wood, so sharpen better and last longer. In general, when buying pencils, buy American made. Dixon pencils are good, and American Gold. But nothing beats Ticonderoga pencils. Yes, Chinese pencils are cheaper, but break easily and sharpen down to nothing.

(5) PLEASE send in tissue. I know it is not your responsibilty to provide for every other child, but think of it this way, if your baby doesn't need to use tissue- that means your baby is not sick!

(6) If you are not a parent of a school age child, please consider donating school supplies to your local school or district. I know you pay taxes, and in some places, every child is provided with the things they need. But this is not the case everywhere, and it is nice if the students can start off the school year feeling prepared. Most teachers will have supplies to give their students, but children who come to school lacking what they need feel embarrassed. I've seen it time and again. If they can come the first day with all their supplies, they will have a better start and feel more confident.

Thanks for taking the time to read this and for considering donating school supplies. :)

This has been a shameless begging post from a public school teacher. :)

I see it less as shameless begging and more as evidence that you truly
care about the emotional health and well being of students everywhere.

Hi Galatea,

If I were a child I would choose you to be my teacher!!!

How thoughtful you are......so kind and caring.

If I lived near you I'd go and buy supplies and bring them to you. So instead, I'll buy some supplies here and donate them in your name. :)

Thanks for the recommendations!!!

Sometimes, not as much as I ought to, I am sorry to say. But thanks very much for your kindness. I need to get back to you on the vegan thread. I missed your post to me about reputable farmers, and you were kind enough to research the topic for me. I missed the post the first go round, and just realized I missed it when the thread was resurrected.

Thanks so much for the sweet words. I appreciate your donation and the students and teachers will as well. I have a good feeling about this school year, God has been very good to me, as well as my principal. I've been painting and decorating my classroom and will post pictures when it is finished.

I will post. It's been slow going. But, I want everything organized before the year starts to start myself off on the right note.

Now I wish I could go back to school and have you as my teacher or I wish I had a kid and I would work on your advice, it's just very good of you to think of others:)

Yes, many kids do benefit. I know parents should provide for their own children, but some can't or some won't. So it is helpful when the community steps into the breach. We have uniforms in our district, so it is less easy to tell if students are wearing hand me down uniforms.

Thanks, I am going to try to make this year the best year. The great thing about teaching is it changes every year. It's kind of like starting a new job every August. It's a great profession for optimists.

I've got 20 years on you, and I LOVE buying school supplies. :) My love for Ticonderoga pencils knows no bounds. I opened them yesterday and inhaled.
