We only watch select sports events which are usually on channels that do not have as many bad advertisements. And even then, we've always shut the TV off for commercials that seem to least bit objectionable. You can tell by the lighting and the first chord of music :p.

While watching shows on TV, I've noticed that the commercials are becoming more and more inappropriate. Although the show that I'm watching is acceptable, I've been seeing sexuality, nudity, and greater violence in the commercials. It seems the content on these channels is becoming more lax than I've ever seen before. Do you think it's going to get to the point where we will not be able to watch TV altogether?
No. But they should be careful how they view it. The mere existence of sin in a movie or commercial shouldn't stop one from watching it because there's sin in real life. However, if one were to watch something and condoning the sin or enjoying it, that would be different. For example, it's one thing to watch Grease as a musical that dramatizes what high school kids (who all have a weird aging disorder that makes them look 30) live through. It's another to watch it and think it's great that Sandy started smoking out of 'love' for Danny and that Rizzo and Kinicki should be sleeping together and the fact that the pregnancy was just a scare means they should just go right back at it.

Of course, some movies are so over the top it's hard to imagine a reason for watching it except for enjoying the sin. For example, the new Fright Night is nothing but sex and misogyny. The old version was a bit disturbing when you though of how the vampire wanted to make a teenager his bride. But the new one...it's shocking. I can't imagine a good reason for watching it other than maybe writing a paper on vampire films or remakes, or maybe seeing if the new version has the same feel as the first (it doesn't) and then ending the film sick to your stomach.

Of course, I think Christians will need to be more and more careful with what they allow their children to watch and decided how to discuss certain issues/scenes when they come up. The children can't be sheltered forever, but Christians parents (I've never been a parent to anyone other than guinea pigs and fish, but I don't think I'm saying anything that's not common sense) shouldn't allow their children to watch Titanic, for example, at age 5, and when the parents do decide the child's old enough, it couldn't hurt to point out that, no they shouldn't marry an abusive guy for money, but neither should they have premarital sex with someone they just met. There's a third option that involves neither abuse nor that type of sin.

Yeah, I got about one hour of sleep last night so this is kind of stream of consciousness. Probably going to sign off now and remind myself that caffeine is no substitute for sleep and the people on here would rather me wait until I kind post a much more condensed, less rambling post.

My TV broke in the mid 1990s. I didn't replace it. So I haven't watched TV for over 20 years. The only time I've watched is at a friends house or when I travel and stay in a motel. What a lot of ________! I watch some netflix movies and believe it or not have gone back to reading the Bible and great books. Wow! So much better. No left wing bias, lies and propaganda, no surprise nude scenes, no degeneracy and filth thrust upon me.

Many of the people who started the USA had only one book to read - the Bible. I can imagine they got to know this book really, really well. They were the foundation of the greatest nation on earth!

I'm reading the comments and here wondering whether Christians are trying to subtlety convince me to not watch TV anymore?

i dont want to preach on works....

but i would consider it wise to stay away from anything youre convicted to maybe walk away from

i personally no longer watch tv
or movies
Same boat. Things like harry potter, based on witchcraft and pokemon have nothing to do with glorifying the Lord, they're the complete opposite of everything He stands for. We all have imperfections to work on, but where we know better, we do better and unless it aligns with Christian values, I don't invest time in it.

Why are so many Christians don't watch TV? We're stay in love with our holy Father but not with the evil world, KJV1John2:15-16 15. Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16. For all is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.,When we're love the world we're not able to love our Father.

Seems like in the past that sports programs were the ideal place for commercials with beer and half naked women.

I watch a news network and baseball. Occasionally Forensic Files on HLN. I really don't think I've seen that many objectionable commercials.

I see a lot of advertising from telephone companies, automobile companies, Arby's, Wisconsin Dells, and a local casino.

45 + frames per second flashing images and messages of who knows what furiously into what can only be interpreted by the subconscious mind in a state of suspended disbelief? Sure watch TV, just don't turn it on.

We watch TV, especially during the summertime, by streaming. (Amazon or NetFlix.) And we record shows most of the time during the season, so flip through commercials.

But there is a way to make a difference. It is a business, and not too many people let them know how they're doing, so if you let them know, it does matter.

One thing I often wrestle with is whether or not Christians should spend so much time and money on entertainment to begin with.
Almost none of it is actually appropriate. Even in kids shows and cartoons. A few years back Katy Perry was on Sesame Street. Her dress was so low cut that parents flooded the station with complaints and the episode was pulled from rotation. Or taking one of her songs on sex and changing the lyrics to kids lyrics. But it's still her song, so when kids hear the real version what will they be hearing?
But I look at the bible. The men in the NT. Their primary focus was preaching and teaching. Not entertainment. Because they viewed the world as a mission field of people dying in sin and that these people needed salvation.
Hard to believe, but the people in the NT had real lives. They weren't preaching fulltime. Pete, John, and Andy went back to fishing. Paul was a tent maker without a sewing machines. That's a lot of stitches. I see him hanging around the fire, talking to his friends for entertainment.

I do get a kick out of how many people are saying give up TV and entertainment while on a social networking site on the Internet.

Some have been in Britain but due to so many complaints and I assume a lack of sales with one company that used to push a gay agenda, they have done a U turn and gone for humour and I hope their U turn goes to show a rise in sales when they promote their products in righteous ways.
I see the UK as a place where the "social agenda" is more advance than America. As it stands now, American TV is being bombard with always honest, kind, righteous homosexual characters. Your nation is ahead of us. You have Captain Jack Harkness.

So often in TV shows I see where if the characters would have followed biblical principles, there wouldn't even have been a story. Anyone watching could take a life lesson from them.

At the time, I was watching a comedy show called "Impractical Jokers" on TruTV. As for the commercials, I was seeing Victoria's Secret intimate-wear being advertised. And I was seeing a reality show called "The Challenge" which airs on MTV, being advertised. And there was another new show for truTV being advertised where the commercial shows a fully naked man laying down holding his crotch so you couldn't see anything.
At this point, if I want to continue watching the show, I'll have to watch it On-Demand where I can fast forward through the commercials. Although in about a month, I'll be moving and have decided to completely eliminate TV altogether. I'm sure I can find other, more productive means of entertainment.

Well, I'm thinking baseball and Olympics, to be specific. Baseball a couple of nights a year to watch an all-star game or the World Series, Olympics in admitted binges every two years. As for beer commercials up until recently they were very clean (I don't have a problem with drinking in moderation, so thus don't have a problem with a beer commercial in and of itself). The half naked women is becoming a problem even in restaurant commercials and otherwise harmless blurbs! Very shocking and annoying. Thus our decision to not watch the commercials. They're a boring waste of time anyway :p.

"Good for you, darlin' --- I believe you have definitely made a good decision."

And, it will prove itself with the passage of time... ( if you will "hold fast" to it )

Not to mention - "you have spoken" - "you have cast your vote" - by telling the modern-producers-of-junk that you are not interested in what they have to offer...

Just imagine how things might be different if every Christian did the same - today - a decade ago - 50 years ago...
