We have a through-the-wall air-conditioner that cools our main floor. It's below the window, and right in front of that a/c is hubby's computer space/office/rinky-dink man cave space. (Not much of a cave, since our whole main floor is one room.)

A/C blowing right on him makes him ache, and even gives him an earache... but we need the a/c.

Now, my grandmother had this beautiful Japanese silk screen thingy. (If I knew what it was called, I could go from there, instead of asking for help.) Sort of like what ladies in 1940s movies would go behind to change, but it was shorter than that. Vague memory that it might have been used to cover up a fireplace, except who is stupid enough to cover up a fireplace with a silk screen, since the silk would burn easily? Sort of like walls for work cubicles, except it was just a wood screen with a pretty Japanese design stretch in it.

Anyway, I'm thinking something like that would be pretty, not take up much room, (can't take a lot of room, because our house is small), and yet, (I hope, don't know) the air would just go around it without hitting hubby first.

Anyone know what I'm talking about? Or, can anyone think of a way to deal with this problem that doesn't require a lot of hard work, (such as hooking something to the ceiling or building that silk screen thingy), would not hurt the a/c, cut down on its efficiency, and doesn't cost a small fortune?

I hate that the a/c hurts him, but I also hate living without a/c. So, feel free to get creative, if you can't think of what to call that screen thingy is called.

Hum, I tried japaneese silk skreen and got some really expensive stuff :p

Room dividers seems to be the same thing, maybe they won't give so many "antique" results?
Or will they be too tall?

LOL I just googled "Japanese silk screens" too, and thought you were a little nuts thinking $39.00 was "really expensive." Then I read it again. No decimal point in that price.

Yeah. Gram was rich and really into antiques.

Although, this might work. All I have to do is talk him into it.

(Talking him into things like this is something like trying to talk a conservative into voting for a liberal. lol)

Thanks. Getting somewhere, at least.

one option is to MOVE HIM and create a New Space, moving stuff and just looking at
something in a new way, whether in a different room or in the same one, 'just moving',
creating out of necessity or boredom...lots of 'surprises can happen here! we recently did
some changes that got us thinking, oy vay, why did we not SEE this years ago?
it can be a great artistic endeavor, takes a willing heart though, and thinking, stepping-out
of OLD-WORN OUT WAYS...the,
'I'm so 'tired of this syndrome and also, sometimes gives one a New sense of something
different that they never thought of before, but often was always there, right before
our face, and the BONUS, it truly does bring some new-joy...

hub and I have gone 'decades' in the same old 'rut' of just letting things go the way that they
always have, and then, guess what? Jesus shows us another way, in the simplest of ways,
and this new way will be very pleasing inside and out!!!! 'if we 'step-out' and try...

lots of choices Lynn, either go on 'line' or go and 'roam' your local Home Depot-Lowes =
you wouldn't believe the things that they have come-up with just to preserve some
privacy, 'outside or inside' and stuff to help one feel more comfortable...
and a lot of them are very inexpensive...

I just saw a day or so ago, that they make a very inexpensive 'roll of something' to give
privacy to people who have backyard decks, it was inexpensive but got the job done...

pray we've helped a little...

Can't you move the computer a few feet so your hubby is beside it and not in front of it? That is how I have my apartment arranged.

For right now he can cover his ear with an earmuff and leave the other side's earmuff off his ear so he can hear.

I am woman! It is in me to like moving furniture around. Before we moved into this house, I revamped the living space about once every 3-5 years, just because. Now here? We can't. Old house, so very few outlets. Skinny house, so very few choices. Between the stairs and the chimney (and no fireplace, just a chimney for the heater, yeesh), we have between 10-11 feet across. Now add a sofa, entertainment center, chair, bookcases, computer desk and tables. There really only is one decorative choice. We even gave up the dining area for his space. (No room in the kitchen for table or chairs either.)

It's still in me to revamp living space. I have gone over it again and again. There is no choice.

Also found out the screen will block too much air, killing the purpose of the a/c. Bummer.

Only if we elect to skip going into the kitchen... ever. lol

He only hears partially out of one ear already.

Hi Lynn,

How about a vent deflector?

It will deflect the air upward instead of directly on him.
