I'm usually reluctant to add friends in online discussion-forums, just because I'm not sure what "constitutes" friendship. How do you determine who to invite as a friend? Is a "like," sufficient? 2 likes? Or would most people wait until they are thoroughly familiar with someone?

There really isn't any protocol. I just do it the way I do it in real life. If there is something about you I like, and want to see what you're up to, I may add you as a friend. But truthfully, most of my friends became friends before I even considered adding them as friends. I never even friended them. lol

Assuming you mean adding people to your friends list.
It can vary by person. Some people love to have large friends lists. They add everyone they can. Others, like myself, keep it from and not bloated.
For the most part adding someone means very little. Personally I refuse friend requests from people I've not interacted with at least once.
So how much it means to you is irrelevant to most others and more a personal feeling.

The protocol is you send out a friendship request to a member who can then either accept or decline.

I only add people that I have talked to before. If after a while we don't talk, I take them off. IMO for mine, it is misleading if I have people on my list and we don't talk or haven't in a while.

Qualifier for mine, is consistent activity
