A crown is a special head ornament, usually consisting of some type of hat or headband, worn by royalty and other persons of high rank within a culture. The first such headgear was probably the cloth headband or turban that tribal leaders wore. These headbands eventually gave way to plain or ornamented metal diadems. In a tomb in Jericho, archaeologists discovered a copper headband or crown made in about 2000 B.C.
