Jerusalem. An Armenian monk in a habit and pointed cowl like the peak of Mount Ararat, the Armenians’ national symbol, in the doorway of St. James Cathedral. The ikon of Jesus faces those approaching the entrance, which is covered with a screen of leather and wool to keep out the cold Jerusalem wind. About ten thousand ceramic tiles, with geometric designs in cobalt blue on a white background, decorate and beautify the cathedral. They were brought here in the 18th century from the Armenian ceramic production center in Kutahay, Turkey.
