Okayyyy so I am not very good at Facebook, I really avoid it, but I need to get in touch with people I have not seen in -years-. I happened to find a couple of them on Facebook... so someone needs to explain this to me, is it a horrible breach of Facebook etiquette to just message people out of the blue? Or do people do that all the time?

If there is a "need" to get in touch with old friends I would think etiquette is irrelevant. And like most things anymore it tends to be a person by person basis, rather than a flat rule.
But don't see why friends would have a problem either way.

I do that all the time. Sometimes people make things weird when they don't have to be. Generally, it's okay to message :)

When in doubt, always use the rule: How would I feel about it if our situations were reversed? Because, you know, there is no real law of etiquette on Facebook :p. It's not like it's the sumptuary laws and your going to get locked up for wearing cloth of gold or fur of ermine :D.

You actually think about people's feelings?

This site just keeps getting weirder and weirder.

I get messages on Facebook all the time. Almost always an extremely attractive woman, who says they are looking for their soul mate. They call me Honey, dear, handsome, or sexy. Eventually they all seem to need an Itunes card, or their phone won't work. Strange.

They sure do. I always ask them to video chat, but they always say their camera doesn't work.

Usually what I do send the person a private message, stating “Hello you may not remember me but I’m _____ from ______.” And I’ll admit I sometimes just straight up send a friend request, but only if I know the person right from sight and think they hopefully remember me as well. For the most part people seem to appreciate the first way though, that way if they don’t remember you at all they have the option to be reminded by your message.

Do be aware though that if their account is set on private that your message will be received as a “message request” first and you may not get a response right away.

Psst... I'm wondering if they're not being entirely honest. Just sayin'! Personally, I always want to take everyone at their word... Jedi mind tricks would totally work on me. Sadly.

An Itunes card?

I've spent a lot more money than that on dates that NEVER called me sexy.

I think you've got a good thing going.... don't complain.

I feel horrible that stuff like that happens to men more often. I get some creepers sometimes, oddly enough usually from like Russia or something.

Oh, don't worry, ol Tommy been around the block a time or two. I'm Sure in reality, they're skinny Nigerian dudes somewhere. I like to jerk them around, and send pics of used ITunes cards.

They call me sexy without fronting the money first. I'm impressed with myself.
