Different from the What are you reading thread, this is abt what you like – or need to read. Maybe you can tell as well how you read=). As a young person, I read what we had in the home library wc wasn’t grand (like encyclopedia on Lands and Peoples, etc), school books and library books. Sometimes older siblings’ readings, like for a time I got into Mills and Boons pocketbooks an older sister was reading. But I did not stay there long, so after a lazy summer w/ variations of romantic themes, I searched elsewhere.

When I was given my personal Bible (NT only at first), it was very precious, although I did not understand very much. I just loved to read a little each day, until I could the OT as well. As a poor speaker, I’d sometimes read portions out loud, and I’m glad oral reading of some other materials helped me learn and practice pronunciation, esp when I was patient enough to get dictionary to check how to say words not familiar. Love to read, but prefer shorter materials to the novels sibs sometimes read, or were reading assignments in school. My family was (then, and now as well) not very poetic folks, so you know I cannot read that much poetry either, except when I have time to read those in available collections, or magazines.

I have to read job or work requirements, devotionals, children’s story books too. I have turned more to short stories, biographies, mostly nonfiction for personal choices, for we do not always have the luxury of time, and much prefer reading hard copy to online (but wc isnt always possible). Ok, I hope people share specific titles and authors, esp if they found these educational, edifying and helpful for them and others, will you?

Ah, I also like to read small or short stuff, like the time during the day, news, OR’s, what the children have pulled out from the grocery shelves and into our pushcart, time issued and duplicate items punched in, for example. Manuals, product labels like the amt of sugar in a serving size, etc., medical literature from purchased med wc can sometimes be interesting, and street signs and names of establishments passed by. I think I've retained the habit of saying slightly out loud kilometer posts for the children when we travel, and signs like Welcome to ---! Letters, bulletin board posts like a coming exhibit wc my sons say they hardly notice nor care about=(. Hymnals and music sheets also, even if I don’t know the songs, the lyrics have me pondering… And now Cc posts when time permits=), among others, often in snatches of time.

When I was a kid, all I had around the house to read was the World Book Encyclopedia and a series called The Classics For Young People.

The majority of what I read now and for the last couple of years are peer-reviewed journal articles. BORING!

I like to read science fiction, but seldom have the time to get into a story. I keep up with my daily schedule of Bible reading, but even on my 4th time through, it still makes no sense when compared to what folks here talk about.

Years ago, I had to read Material Safety Data Sheets as part of my job, and that was kind of interesting.

As a kid, I had a good home library with reference books to read through, and my grandparents bought me subscriptions to National Geographic magazine for years.

I read a fair amount. Always have. I read perhaps 120 Edgar Rice Burroughs books in grade school and jr high (Tarzan, John Carter of Mars, Carson Napier of Venus, and a couple other series). During this same phase I read around 20 Louis L'amour books and a half dozen Henry Reed Inc. books.

During college I didn't read as much--too much studying and partying. I went through a period of around 12 or 14 years as a recent college grad where I didn't read any non-fiction. I read about misc topics: architecture, mythology (I guess that's fiction, isn't it?), Shakespeare (I like the modern English translations), and a few books on mathematics, physics, computers and law. I also read the bible OT and NT (at different times).

Within the past ten years I've read a bit of fiction, and a lot more on religion. I like Martin Cruz Smith (fiction). I've read several Ellen G. White books (SDA). And I've read a few volumes of bible commentary.

My favorite authors are Michael Lewis and Tracy Kidder. I believe I've read all the books they've written.

Finally, for the sake of full disclosure, I am a book hoarder. I own an embarrassingly large number of books. Far too many for me to read in my lifetime. lol :)

I'm old school. Almost everything I read (except for CC) is on the printed page. That's HOW I read.

As to WHAT I read, I'm pretty broad-minded. I like works that are clean and well-written, and I don't care for anti-Christian perspectives. I usually find classics more enjoyable than more modern works, with a few exceptions. I'm not a fan of Sci-fi or more modern fantasy, more into things written during an era that already was, or a current era here on earth. I really enjoy history and historic fiction.

I'm on my fourth time through the bible too. This is the first time that I will have read the bible from Genesis through Revelation. Try to read 1 or 2 chapters a day. Started this latest project last September. Today I have read it through Jeremiah, Chapter 22. I agree with you in that what I read and understand in my own reading does not match a lot of what I read in the BDF. Somebody tries to make a point and throws up 20 or 30 verses. I really don't find the BDF to be spiritually edifying. Entertaining at times, sure. Amusing, often. Uplifting, no. Mostly, a lot of people trying to prove they'ew right and everyone else is wrong.

When I was a kid, there were no books in my house, not even a Bible. My reading was restricted to school books.

Today I read the Bible every day. I also read history. I tend to not waste my time on books that do not teach me or educate me. I want to know and be informed. I want to know how. I want to know why.
Just never enjoyed novels or fiction.
While I seem to have a good comprehension I do read slowly. Take me longer that others.

If i could have printed pp all the time, i prefer that too. Sometimes i take time to print so it is possible to carry outside and read while waiting for transport, even the hosp. or bank. Then i am glad i dont sit and just stare around esp the last two, where waiting can take anywhere from a few mins. to more than an hour.

You remind me of Abraham Lincoln. I only know he didnt have very much to read and borrowed from teacher... If there wasn't much responsibilities, i could find a short novel that the children were reading in school, but i no longer buy them. These i would sometimes 'speed read' just so i know what it was all about, or read parts i could quickly, but not finish=(.

I knew
there was something i missed to mention, and that is recipes! Probably unlike you, however, i dont always follow instructions, for i tend to substitute ingredients, and most of all-- reduce sugar drastically that the baked things usually have really different texture/consistency as a result. Of course it doesnt taste as 'good' for those who will consume it=).

When I was a kid I use to read the dictionary, I would look up the longest
words I could find and try to work out how to pronounce them. I found it
fascinating! I’m still a strange person.

this was one of my favourites - onomatopoeia
Its a word that sounds like the noise it describes, bang, squeak, beep etc.

I see a LOT of the topics on this site as the OP making a declaration and challenging the other members to argue with them. I like reading some threads in the BDF and I get a chance to go through the verses that are posted as "proof", and generally by the time I am done with checking them out, I've determined that 99% of those verses are taken wildly out of context and I can disregard anything that poster has to say from that point forward.

Maybe because i do not, or cannot dwell on the bdf very long, there is more i miss than can find edifying, or amusing as tourist says also. But i still like to read some threads to see what others who do not frequent the Misc. and other forums have to say.

Perhaps just try 1/4 or 1/5 reduction first...? Idk if it would work with u however. How abt the shiny crust, for example? That needs Sugar, does it not? And what else? You didnt tell.
