1The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.

2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.

3 He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

5 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.

6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.

When I was in college I lived in a house that was about a 3/4 mile to class. One of the fellows who lived in that same house printed out the 23rd psalm and memorized it while walking to/from class. I always thought that was pretty cool.

I now live about a mile from where I work. I often walk to work. So a couple years back I printed out the 23rd psalm and memorized it while walking to/from work. I memorized the KJV, like above, because it is the most poetic version and just sounds better than the others. :)

Psalm 23 is a very 'popular' psalm we never get tired of. Once we visited an in-law's church recently, and the youth were reciting the psalm w/ one verse each person. I missed the days when our younger children recited their memory verses in school, and hope they continue with that even with the many distractions in school and outside nowadays.

I memorized this psalm in Sunday School, in about Grade 3. That is over 50 years ago. It has stuck with me! It has given me hope a peace.

I confess, I did modernize, in the last few years. So I have it memorized in 2 versions.

This psalm is really good to meditate on. Just say it slowly to yourself, and God will minister you through it!

You are right! This verse is so often spoken in times of death, so I think maybe it's application to our lives while living gets overlooked. I know that I missed out on its significance. Thank you for sharing. That was truly a blessing!
